Wringer
Wringer
He was not aware that he ever stopped crying. In his sleep a voice echoed down the long dark barrel of a cannon: You have run out of birthdays. In the morning he awoke suddenly to a flutter of wings.
Birthdays are an obsession where Palmer comes from, but if turning a year older means initiation into a violent practice he despises, he'd rather not. Unfortunately, Palmer cannot stop time any more than he can change tradition. So as this next and most important birthday approaches, Palmer knows that it's now or never. Something must be done.

Newbery Medal-winning author Jerry Spinelli tells a story of peer pressure so foul, so horrifying, that Wringer should be shelved along with Robert Cormier's The Chocolate War. Nine-year-old Palmer dreads his upcoming 10th birthday. In his town, when boys are 10 years old they become "wringers," the boys who wring the necks of wounded pigeons at the annual Pigeon Day shoot. Palmer is sickened by the whole event. To make matters worse, his new buddies--Beans, Mutto, and Henry--have just discovered that Palmer has been hiding a pet pigeon in his room. What will Palmer do? Will he become a wringer to save face, or will he follow his heart? Wringer will appeal to preteens and younger teens who love to read suspenseful books on their own, but it would also be a good story to read aloud to spark discussion about the perils and nuances of peer pressure.

Antique Laundry wringer or mangle
Antique Laundry wringer or mangle
I recently bought this antique wringer/mangle. I haven't decided what to do with it yet, other than put it in my show-and-tell collection for my students. It's too beautiful to leave in a closet for most of the year, though, so I need to find a prominent place for it. There are a lot of identifying markings on it from different manufacturing companies, Institutes, trademarks, etc. After I did a cursory investigation on all the markings, I estimate this wringer to have been made some time between 1909 and 1921 or shortly after. The wringer patent was probably granted June 12, 1898, which is a marking I saw on another, almost identical wringer - a 361 model. My estimated dates are based on the Good Housekeeping Institute stamped on it, which didn't exist until 1909, and the fact that the Lovell Manufacturing Company began making wringers out of metal after 1921. This is just an estimate on my part based on what I found on the Internet. There are probably business records out there that could narrow that time frame further, or prove me wrong. Markings on front: No. 241, Universal, Rolls....(something), Horse Shoe Brand, Improved Guide Board for Spreading Clothes, (horse shoe TM stamp), Tested and Approved by the Good Housekeeping Institute for Good Housekeeping Magazine, Serial No. 2284, Warranted 3 years for Family Use, Reversible Water Board, For Round or Stationary Tubs Markings on back: Horse Shoe Brand made by Lovell Manufacturing Co, Erie, PA, U.S.A., under exclusive license from American Wringer Company, Inc., Woonsocket, R.I. and (two horseshoe trademark stamps). Markings on roller: Niagara, Lovell Mfg. Co, Erie, PA, U.S.A. (with an anchor stamp)
