Due to a huge amount of interest from families in North Canterbury,Discovery 1 is looking into creating a satellite school on or close to Tram Road route into Christchurch. This has come about due to the number of families interested in enrolling at Discovery 1 in Christchurch city, but unable to travel each day to get to the city site. We have a group of local families who are driving this forward. The school will be an extension of Discovery 1 based in North Canterbury on a green site. It will come under the governance and management of Discovery 1 and work under the special character that underpins all learning. This site will have its own unique rural flavour developed by the learning community that attend. The learning community will also have some parents co-opted onto the Discovery 1 Board of Trustees, so the community voice is heard. We are currently working with the Ministry of Education in creating the first step, which involves us applying for a role increase. In the process of applying for this increase, we will also ask for a split site or satellite site for us. If we get approval for this, we will then need to start looking for a site. This is where you could help. If you know of a site around the Tram Rd area that would suit around 100-150 kids and have a good sized green space, please let us know. As soon as we hear that the roll increase has been approved we will contact you all and organise a meeting to look at the next steps. We have to supply information from the Dept of Stats, which is fun. As well as school information from the MOE which is proving to be a little more problematic. We plan to have to information into the MOE next week. I will also be able to devote more time to this endevour as ERO have now been and gone and were happy with what they saw here, apart from a couple of boxes we deliberately sit outside that needed ticking!
