AWR 160 WMD-Terrorism Awareness (on-line)

AWR 160 is the U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security's (DHS) introductory course on terrorism and weapons of mass destruction (WMD).  This class is authorized by DHS and the California Emergency Management Agency (Cal EMA).  This course is the national standard.  It is available on-line for free.

\Students will learn:

  • What is terrorism?
  • Types of Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD)
  • Terrorist Planning Process.
  • How to use the Emergency Response Guide (ERG).
  • RAIN (Recognize hazard, Avoid, Isolate, Notify)

ERGs are suppose to be in every police car and fire rig in the U.S., Canada and Mexico.   It is essential for all emergency responders to learn how to recognize haz-mat/WMD and what the evacuation zone is; the ERG is the reference manual to accomplish this.

Certificate and C.E.U.s  -  Those passing the quiz, will receive a certificate.  The certificate is printed from the website.  There are no C.E.U.s available for this class.

Live Instructor Training and Prep Sessions - Dr. Cheng and colleagues used to teach this class live.  In 2009, budget cuts took a toll.  While grant monies paid for student manuals and the paperwork to adminster the class, it eliminated free ERGs and test booklets.  The ERG is a free download.  However, you may find it easier to buy a hard copy for your glovebox/go-kit/backpack from the U.S. Government Printing Office or commerical vendor.

Dr. Cheng started giving prep sessions to assist people in getting ready for the quiz they will take at home on line after the session.  To prepare for the sesion, Dr. Cheng asks participants to download the ERG and familiarize themselves with it.  If they have a laptop, he asks they bring it with them so they could use the ERG in the prep session.  If they can buy a ERG, he recommends this.  He also recommends people familiarize themselves with the on-line AWR 160 course and print the quiz out and bring it to the prep session.  He also asks participants print out, go over and bring to class the AWR 160 Notes.

Please note, government responders have priority seating when we have a prep session.

[Note - AWR 160 (on-line) replaces AWR 110.  AWR-160's quiz is half-as-long as AWR-110's].

On-Line Course

We seldom have prep sessions.  Please take AWR 160 WMD/Terrorism Awareness for Emergency Responders (New).  Avoid other courses.  When we do teach AWR 160 WMD-Terrorism Awareness it is as a prerequisite for a Management and Planning Level Training or Performance Level Training courses.  The people who need the class as a prerequisite tend to take most of the seats in our live AWR 160 WMD-Terrorism Awareness class.

AWR 160 is a free on-line course which takes about an evening or two to finish.   We have notes for AWR 160 to assist you (courtesy of Jim Curio).  Review these notes first, take the course, and then review the notes before you take the quiz.
