This pathfinder provides an overall introduction to disability as a whole, but focuses specifically on so-called "hidden disabilities." Hidden disabilities are often psychiatric in nature, but may also be physical conditions that are not obvious to others. These disabilities are frequently misunderstood and often result in discrimination as a result. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) provides for "reasonable accommodations" for both physical and mental disabilities. However, while progress has been significant (though far from complete) in addressing discrimination on the basis of physical disabilities, there has been less progress made on dealing with hidden disabilities.

This pathfinder includes a statement regarding the intended audience, its purpose, and some basics about disability law: federal laws, protected groups, and general resources. The pathfinder will focus on laws, protections, and useful resources regarding hidden disabilities more specifically. It also provides resources for further research and learning about hidden disabilities and the law.
