ZEN Directory

Welcome to Directory!

Directory gives you access to your corporate LDAP Address Book from your iPhone/3G or iPod Touch. Search and view contacts by their first name, last name or email address using simple and already familiar Contacts application user interface. Directory is easy to setup and use, no gimmicks, just the features and functionality you need to access your corporate contacts on the go.

FEATURES

- Works with any LDAPv3 compliant server.
- Supports LDAP, LDAPS and LDAP/StartTLS.
- Allows Dial, Mail and Map actions for contacts.
- Can save as new contacts to Contacts or add to any existing contacts.
- Persistent state keeps the last search result around, accessible offline.
- Goes easy on your battery, connects to the server only when necessary.

NOTE that this application requires a network connection, either Wi-Fi or 3G/Edge, to operate.

Support Information

Before you begin you need to specify your Server, Account and Search preferences. If you have LDAP already configured in your Address Book, Mail or Thunderbird on your computer you can use the same settings for Directory app. Otherwise check with your IT Help Desk on what settings to use. To configure Directory locate its settings pane in the Settings Application. If you would like to submit feedback, bug report, request for enhancement or interested in volume licensing for your organization you can send an email to zen.directory at gmail dot com.

Account Information

This is where you specify your identity Directory will use when connecting to the server.

Identity field reflects your login name also known as LDAP Bind DN.

Password field reflects the password associated with your identity.

You can leave Identity and Password fields empty for anonymous identity.

Directory Server

LDAP field is where you specify which server to connect to and search for contacts. It can be any LDAPv3 compliant Directory Server you are able to connect and authenticate to either using your identity or anonymously.

Server Port field allows you to specify the server port number explicitly.

Port number 636 is default for LDAPS, Port 389 is default for LDAP/StartTLS.

Use SSL to make sure your identity and password sent to the server over encrypted connection.

SSL is ON by default.

Search Options

Search Base field tells the server where to search for your contacts. Most servers will allow an empty base, meaning your search would apply to the entire server tree, for instance your entire organization. You might want to provide a custom search base however to limit your search to a more specific branch of that tree, for instance to search only Marketing branch of your organization.

Results Limit tells your server the maximum number of search results it should send each time you search for contacts. Reducing this limit might help to speed your search up and increasing this limit might help when your search term is less precise so that you can have more contacts to choose the right one from manually.

Note that some servers impose their own limit that can override the limit you specify and may return less results than expected.

Low Memory

iPhone OS detects when its low on memory and warns all running applications so that they can free up resources. If that happens Directory will try to reduce its memory footprint as much as possible, save its current application state and display Low Memory warning. In some cases it is not enough however and iPhone OS can terminate the application if low memory condition is getting worse. Re-launching Directory can help but more often than not there is simply not enough free memory left in the system. If re-launching Directory does not help you might wanna try closing no longer needed pages in Safari, messages in Mail and stopping iPod playback. Last resort is restarting your device by switching it off then turning it back on again. Directory has a very small memory footprint and has been very carefully tested to eliminate any possible memory leaks so it is unlikely to be the culprit for low memory issues.

Hopefully the information on this page is helpful to get you started with Directory. Make sure to check for updates every now and then.
