Letter from Emily Murphy to her four co-petitioners, May 1928. She enclosed a new petition to sign, addressed to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in London. / Lettre d'Emily Murphy à ses qu -3- Too highly of the excellent manner in which Mr. Rowell presented his arguments on our behalf and I am fully satisfied that no other counsel in Canada is so well informed upon all the various phases of the reference. Please express your wish concerning this. While we regret that the decision of the Supreme Court of Canada was not favorable to our cause, I am sure we are agreed that their decision was a sincere one and should not be adversely criticized by any of us. For the several years past the women of Canada, owing to what appeared to be a hopeless situation, took comparatively little interest in this matter of the interpretation of the word “Persons” in Section 24 of the B.N.A. act. Our motion in appealing to the Supreme Court of Canada for a ruling gave to the women of all parties a renewed hope and had the effect of stimulating them to something approaching definite notion. We have every reason to felicitate ourselves in this behalf. Of the ultimate results I have not the slightest doubt. Nothing can prevent our winning. Every editor in Canada except those of Quebec is backing us in the appeal. When the time is ripe, it can reasonably be predicted that the French editors will also concede in the justice and propriety of our claim. It is also truly encouraging—and we may take the assurance to our hearts – that no extension of the franchise has ever been defeated since John, the King of England, signed the Magna Charta of Runnymede Yours very sincerely, [Signature] Source: Library and Archives Canada-RG 13, vol. 2524, file C1044. "ORANGE — The new waste collection franchise in Orange is on track to accomplishing its goal of delivering 100,000 trash bins to homes throughout the city by Friday. The City Council awarded CR&R Waste Services a $100-million-plus, eight-year contract in July 2009 to become the city's trash collector. The company is taking over from Waste Management and the contract begins Feb. 1. To accomplish the task of delivering so many trash bins, CR&R spokesman Dean Ruffridge said the company has 80 workers, divided into seven teams scattered throughout the city. As Waste Management trucks collect trash and pick up some bins, Ruffridge said CR&R trucks are right behind them to drop off three new bins to homes. The drop-offs are similar to the one that occurred on the 3000 block of Craig Street, Wednesday morning. Two 18-wheelers full of bins were unloaded by workers, who lined up three bins in front of each home on the street. The caravan also included an 18-passenger van to accommodate the workers and a truck pulling a portable restroom." -Orange County Register Related topics: photo studio franchise mobile dry cleaning franchises book store franchise consultancy franchises franchise mortgage acceptance company business franchise opportunity best franchise mode monster golf franchise |
