The first outing of a DPCC 3rd XI for many a year didn't go quite according to plan. The fact that any cricket was possible at all was a miracle after the torrential rain over the last month. Both the 1st & 2nd XI games had long succumbed to the weather, but the fast drying common allowed this opening league match to go ahead, albeit on a very soggy and green strip.
It was good to see veteran Dinas player Ian Richardson back in action after a break of eight years or so.
Rob Tucker won the toss and surprisingly elected to bat with old head Geoff "Compo" Colley at one end, and youngster Alex Vowles at the other. Vowles went quickly, as did a succession of Dinas batters, with Compo providing some resistance at the other end. Rob Tucker hit the first 6 of the season before falling, and Dinas rather capitulated to 89 all out despite stubborn resistance from U15 Rhys Lloyd. Eight of the 10 wickets were bowled, suggesting more work on defensive technique is required.
The players turned straight round, and the Cobras were soon in trouble losing an early wicket to James "Ministats" Hiscocks, the young Dinas leggie who opened the bowling. With another 17 year old, Reuben Mitchell seaming from the other end, the youngsters bowled some tidy stuff, but gave enough loose balls for the batters to prosper. Skipper Tucker brought himself on, and after a false start bowled tidily. The yout in the filed brought a level of athletisism that hasn't been seen in some Dinas sides for a while! Red Todd-Bennett threw in for a superb run out, and Malachai Corrigan was lively in the field also. Tucker struck with two wickets, and Hiscocks weighed in with a second for himself with one that almost turned square, neatly caught by Vowles behind the timbers. However, 89 was never enough to defend, and the Cobras ran out easy 5wkt winners with plenty of overs to spare.
So a losing start by the 3's, but this squad is all about developing the younger players supported by older heads. And it's also good to see league cricket back on the common. They will learn and get better, and we should see some of these lads pushing for 2nd XI spots later this season.
Next Saturday sees the 1's away at Ponthir, the 2's entertain Ebbw Vale II's at Bryn y Don (1pm start) and the 3's have a friendly on the common (1.30pm start). Please come along and support us.
