Replacing and/or Upgrading the Hard Disk Drive in the Toshiba 1115-S103

Also, 1115-S10x, 1110 Series, 1710, 1735, 1750, 1755, and many others...

I recently decided to upgrade to a larger, faster hard drive in my decent-performing budget-priced Toshiba 1115-S103 Notebook Computer. Its 20GB drive was too small for me and too slow, so I purchased a Toshiba 40GB 5400RPM drive. It turned out to be a little more complicated than I had thought to upgrade the hard drive, as there was no documentation on how to do this or support on such a matter by Toshiba. Therefore, I created this website to help those who may need it to upgrade their drive.

It would be great to hear what different Toshiba models this guide applies to. Please email me if you have any suggestions or comments, or if you can tell me which model you used this guide with (I will add the models to the site). Thanks! ~Russ

1. Begin by removing the shown screws on the bottom of the casing

2. Remove the two screws on the back of the computer shown.

3. This is the trickiest step: CAREFULLY pry off the plastic plate covering the area above the keyboard. Start on each side, and carefully lift it off. After that is complete, remove the four screws indicated.

4. Carefully pull the two pins on each side of the keyboard cable and (likewise, carefully) pull out the cable.

5. Do the same with the exposed hard drive cable.

6. Now unscrew the LCD panel from the base and, very carefully, pry upwards the chip connecting the LCD panel to the rest of the computer. Now the LCD panel is completely separated from the main system. Special thanks to Raam Dev for correcting these images...I originally forgot to circle a couple screws!

7. Remove the screws that were underneath the keyboard.

8. Now, pry off the upper half of the main system's plastic casing (it should come off without too much difficulty).

9. There the hard drive is!! You should be able to figure out how to change it from here. Pull the drive towards you to unplug it, and then remove the casing before putting the new drive into it.

The (somewhat) dissected laptop...

If you found this site incredibly helpful, feel free to send a buck or two my way through PayPal...it would help me out...don't feel obligated though!
