I have identified 4 main types/genres of diabolo / Chinese Yo-Yo performances:
- Traditional
- Traditional diabolo performances mainly focus on tricks that were initially from the Chinese Yo-Yo. These tricks include the "ant goes up the tree" and other tricks. Traditional performances do not necessarly have to use Chinese Yo-Yo; diabolo's work fine too.
- Music: Asian Music such as 12 Girls Band or any Chinese/Taiwanese music.

- Contemporary / Modern
- Tricks: European style. "Cool looking"

- Example: Ryo Yabe and William Liang's Style

- Comedic
- Key Characteristic: A funny storyline.
- Tricks:

- Key Characteristic: Includes various dance moves, and/or interpretive storyline, and/or exotic costumes
- Tricks: any. usually not very advanced tricks since its focus on the art.
