What is type 1 diabetes versus type 2 diabetes? There are two types of diabetic classifications: Type 1 and Type 2. If you have Type 2 diabetes, you are among millions of other Type 2 diabetics whose pancreas can still produce insulin. If you have Type 1 diabetes, you are among millions of other Type 1 diabetics whose pancreas does not produce insulin at all. Although the pancreas of a Type 2 diabetic still produces some insulin, not enough insulin is produced or utilized properly by the diabetes patient and the glucose ("sugar") in their blood is blocked from entering into the the body's cells for proper metabolism. When too much glucose is not getting into the cells for metabolism, excess sugar in the blood causes Hyperglycemia (high blood sugar). This can lead to serious short-term and long-term diabetes related complications (and even death), if the glucose level is not maintained at normal levels through insulin injections or other medical therapies. |
