What is diabetes gum disease? Diabetes patients may develop Inflammation of the gums ( gingivitis) and gum disease ( periodontal disease). Similar to other infections in the body, gum disease can increase blood sugar levels. High blood sugar increases the risk of gum disease because bacteria in the mouth thrive on sugar. The blood vessels can thicken and reduce oxygen flow leading to further inflammation. It is important the patient with diabetes flosses and brushes their teeth (including below the gum line) at least daily. They should also avoid smoking. Poor oral hygiene has been associated with increased risk for having a heart attack or stroke. |
