It was on 1996 that the version 2.0 Opera was released. It’s quite popular that time so in October 10, 1997 they launch a “Project Magic” to determine how and who are willing to purchase their browser in their OS and to properly distribute the funds to develop the OS. 30th November 1997, the voting closed then it became a news column for updates.

Opera 3 was then released on 31st December 1997, supporting JavaScript and multiple operating system. Another version which is Opera 3.5 was released in 1998, adding CSS support and file upload capabilities. On 28th June 200, Opera 4 was released for windows, as it introduce a new cross-platform core and a newly integrated e-mail client.

Opera 5 was then released on 6th December with ad-sponsored rather than Trial period. 29th November 2001, Opera 6 was then released, after a year later. New functions and features added including Unicode support.

Due to the emerging of third-party browsers, Microsoft blocked all the user from accesing MSN.com on 24th October 2001, and only IE were not affected but after cries of antitrust behavior, Microsoft removed the restriction but Opera user were still lock out from MSN.com content.

Opera 7 was then released on 28th January 2003 with a new “Presto” layout engine and a lot of improvement on CSS, DOM and so on. On 2004 review in The Washington Post, they even describe Opera 7.5 as complicated and difficult to use & also criticized the free edition. So by August 2004, More support were added on Opera 7.6 and it was never officially released as a final version.

19th April 2005, Opera 8 was released. Changes a lot of features and interface, it also introduce support for SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics). 20th September 2005 another release which is Opera 8.5 and Opera announce that this version would be free of charge and then no more advertisement onwards.
