HISTORY OF NETSCAPE
Netscape’s web browser from version 1.0 through 4.8 was called Netscape Navigator. Its first beta release version was released on 1994, which is known as Mosaic and then Mosaic Netscape which change to Netscape Navigator due to a legal challenge from National Center for Supercomputing Applications (Makers of Mosaic), whom many are Netscape’s founders thus leading to a name change. The browser became a market leader while in Beta, and continuously grows rapidly after version 1.0 was released due to its advance features. Upon releasing version 2.0, a Full mail reader called Netscape Mail has integrated with Netscape Navigator, making it from a mere browser to an Internet suite. During this period, AOL also started bundling their software with Microsoft Internet Explorer. Netscape released version 3.0 and face a serious competition with Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0, However Netscape easily held off Microsoft’s challenge and remain number one web browser. Netscape 3.0 was a huge success due to its new features such as plug-ins, background colors for tables and so on. Its final and latest version was 3.04 Netscape 4 said Netscape Navigator is a problem as both the name of the suite and the browser contained within has the same name, so they rename the suite to Netscape Communicator. They released 5 preview from 1996 – 1997, which is when Netscape Corp. released the final version of Netscape Communicator in June 1997. It uses almost more or less the same concept of Netscape Navigator 3 Coode, but updated and added a lot of new features. The new suite was quite successful, despite the increasing competition from Internet Explorer 4.0 and problems with outdated browser core. The suite was made up of Netscape Navigator, Netscape Mail and Newsgroup, Netscape Address Book and Netscape Composer (an HTML editor, which later became Mozilla composer was split off into a completely separate product, Nvu).Netscape Communicator 4.5 was released on October 1998, which has a lot of functionality improvement but didn’t update the browser core which a month later Netscappe Communication Corporation was bought by AOL. A stand Alone version of Netscape Navigator was still available but stopped at version 4.08 for windows while Unix/Linux were maintained up to version 4.8 In January 1998, Netscape Communications Corporation announced that all their future version of software will be free and developed by an Open Source community (Mozilla). Netscape communicator 5.0 was then announced, but a significant delay of the release of Netscape’s next major version and Communicator which causes a more advance support of HTML 4, CSS, DOM and ECMAScript by Internet Explorer starting with version 4 and up-to-date Internet Explorer 5.0 became the leading of the Usage of Market Share. In November 1998, Netscape 5.0 was then cancelled in favor of developing a new program from scratch. The re-written of the code or program was in the form of Mozilla web browser, which Netscape 6 was based on. Netscape was taken over by AOL, whom were pressured from Web Standards project and forced its new division to release Netscape 6.0 in 2000. This suite consist of Netscape Navigator, Other communicator components and AOL instant messenger client and Netscape Instant Messenger. But Netscape 6 was not ready for release and ended up a big failure. It web browser were based on Mozilla 0.6 which was not ready to be used on public thus causing crash often. Although a later version of Netscape 6 was improved, the community still didn’t really pay much attention to it. August 2002, Netscape 7.0 was released, a continuation of Netscape 6. On June 2003, Netscape 7.1 was then released which was a new AOL-free-version. Somewhere around 2003, Netscape was closed down but Mozilla.org continued, and Mozilla take a lot of Netscape’s ex-employes because it’s an Independent Mozilla foundation. Although AOL continued to develop Netscape, but no commitment from staff, the improvement were low. So a year later, August 2004, the last version was released – Netscape 7.2. 23rd January 2007, Netscape confirmed that Netscape browser should be continued by a new stand-alone browser, which was Netscape Navigator 9. Features were enhanced, with a multi-platform support. The new release was also based on Mozilla Firefox with all the support of Firefox add-ons and plugins. 5th June 2007, first beta was released and final version released on 15th October 2007. Though on 28th December 2007, Netscape announced that AOL would discontinue their web browser due to low market share and end up closing on 1st March 2008, which then they offer their support for migration to Flock and Mozilla Firefox.
