If you have studied investing, you know that the key to success is buying assets that provide a growing stream of income forever. It is possible to invest in web properties much the same way as real estate only at much lower cost and therefore lower risk.

Web Property Advantages

Web property has many advantages over real estate.

  • Low entry cost: I have bought properties for as little as 99 cents. It is a rare property that goes for over $100,000, while real estate is generally way more expensive.
  • Low carrying cost: Real estate is taxed, has maintenance fees, and more. It takes significant rent to turn a profit. A Web property can be left vacant and only cost one registrar renewal fee (ususally less than $10) each year. A developed site can be as little as three dollars a month, registrar renewal included! It takes little income to make one of these profitable.
  • Global reach: Real estate in New York is of little use to people in LA. One web site is visible worldwide. eBay was created for the San Francisco area but grew to a global commerce powerhouse.
  • Incredibly customizable: The use of real estate is limited by zoning, the size of the property, distance from and access to other resources, etc. A web property can be used for anything at all. Any size website can be put up, from one page to a major e-commerce site.
  • Portable: A building in New York serves New York. If you move to LA you can't really take the building with you. If you don't like the way the city is running things you can't take your property elsewhere. Web properties can be administered from anywhere and if you don't like how your host is running things you can change to a new host in hours at little cost.
  • Testing and Tracking: Everything your visitors do while at your site is recorded. It is easy to see what is happening and find ways to fix problems. Two different sites can be tested side by side to see how people interact differently with them. Entire books are written on how this can make your life easier. Compare this to real estate. How can you build two diferent buildings on the same land an test which one will make you more money?
