The Drahthaar is a German hunting breed known not only for their exceptional hunting, tracking and birding skills, but also as a highly intelligent, affectionate and loyal breed. What's the Difference Between a Drahthaar and a Wirehair Pointer? The distinction is this: all Drahthaars are Wirehair Pointers, but not all Wirehair Pointers are Drahthaars. In order to be officially classified as a Drahthaar, an extensive array of x-rays, measurements and other specifications must be in accordance with the Verein Deutsch Drahthaar Breeding Regulations. Once approved, your Drahthaar will be given a tattoo inside his or her ear acknowledging her official status as a recognized and breed-perfect Drahthaar. Needless to say, the Drahthaar community takes the preservation of the breed very seriously, and by such stringent means they have preserved the Drahthaar as the awesome breed of dog that they are! In America, Drahthaars will normally be classified as Wirehair Pointers, as this is the closest breed recognized in the United States. People will stop you on the street and ask you what kind of a dog you have when you're walking with a Drahthaar, but I always tell them I have either a Wirehair Pointer or a "German Hunting Breed," because no one has EVER heard of a Drahthaar. It's cool to be so unique! |
