DeSmuME was the first publicly available DS emulator that actually worked with commercial games. It is no longer the best emulator out there, but it is still being update and improved, so that you can expect a lot from this package.

NDS rom emulators like No$GBA and NeonDS have better compatibility.

If you ask me I like the No$NDS the best, but it depends on what games you plan on playing. NoGBA no longer needs the DS Lite BiOS to play roms same as NeonDS "NDS BIOS file is not required for running games"
