Prairie Meadows Presents The Des Moines Dance Off

A Regional Dance Competition for All Dance Styles

And a Chance to Win a share of the $2500 in Prizes!

Des Moines, IA –April 5, 2010 -- Prairie Meadows is proud to present the region’s first dance competition for all ages and dance styles plus a chance for performers to win a portion of the $2500 in prizes.

In the genre of "So You Think You Can Dance," "America's Got Talent," "Dancing With The Stars," and "America's Best Dance Crew," tryout judges will consist of regional dance teachers and organizations. The final dance off event will feature judges including leaders, dance professionals, plus the viewing audience.

The tryout event will be held June 13, 2010 and the finalist event will be held June 20, 2010. Both events will occur at the Prairie Racetrack and Casino, Altoona, IA. Families and the public are invited to attend both events to cheer on your dancer and vote for their favorite performance. Tickets are $7 and are available at the door for both events.

Dancers that would like to tryout have an early entry deadline of May 1st for $20 per performance or late entry deadline by May 15th at $25 per performance. All proceeds from the event will benefit Ballet Des Moines – The area’s premier professional dance company.

The finals event will be taped and aired statewide on Mediacom (date to be announced). During the show, people watching at home can vote for their 'fan favorite' and a re-cap show will honor this winner.

“We are so pleased and proud to work with Prairie Meadows on such a fun event on behalf of Ballet Des Moines and the dance region at large”, said Katherine Harrington, Board President. “We are raising funds to help support a full time ballet company that calls Des Moines home, and proceeds from this event will get us just that much closer to our goal.”

After the finalist event, the community is invited to the Dance Rocks! awards celebration honoring Dance Off winners. In addition, statewide dance teachers and educators will be honored including: The Diversity in Dance Award, The Young Teacher Award, Pioneer in Dance Award, and the Dance Visionary Award.

The Dance Off is presented by Prairie Meadows, Silver Sponsored by The Principal Financial Group,  Bronze Sponsored by Hy-Vee, Saturday Manufacturing and TPI and Support Sponsored by IMT Insurance.

On the toes

Teams from the region will participate in the first-ever Des Moines Dance Off to be held June 13 and 20 at Prairie Meadows

The hype around reality television programs such as “So, You Think You Can Dance,” “America’s Next Best Dance Crew” and “Dancing with the Stars” continues to increase with more shows being created. Much of the talent showcased on television takes place far from the Midwest, but that will change soon. Talent from the region will compete for $2,500 in cash prizes in the first-ever Des Moines Dance Off — a regional dance competition for all ages — on June 13 and 20 at Prairie Meadows.
“It’s interesting to see how dance has become so mainstream over the past few years,” said Katherine Harrington, board president of Ballet Des Moines. “The Des Moines Dance Off will be a way to bring together talent not just from Iowa, but outside the state, too.”

To date, approximately 250 individuals, along with numerous teams and groups, have registered for the event, which is open until May 31. Salsa, break dancing, ballet, tap and lyrical are just a few styles of dance that will be showcased. Harrington says the event will offer 70 different acts with dancers from more than 20 studios involved.

“Although the event hasn’t happened, we’ve already surpassed our goal for participation,” said Harrington, a former ballerina. “We hope this is something that we can look forward to for many years.”

For those looking for a career in dance, the Des Moines Dance Off is the perfect opportunity to show off the many hours spent practicing. That’s the case for Melissa Able, a junior from West Des Moines Valley who plans to become a professional ballet dancer.

“I believe it’s going to be a great experience because many of the performances I do currently involve mostly people from around the area,” Able said. “This is an opportunity to also see other dancers from outside central Iowa.”

Next month’s event is just a small step for Able as the dancer will spend her senior year of high school studying at the world-renowned University of Music and Performing Arts in Munich, Germany. Able received the scholarship to the University from the Youth America Grand Prix, the world’s largest student ballet competition that awards more than $250,000 annually. Able intends to return to Valley to graduate with her classmates next spring.

“It’s a great honor and opportunity to learn at the university,” Able said. “I would love to have a career in dance, and these are just a few small steps in helping me achieve my goal.”

Harrington says having individuals like Able and others who are involved in the Ballet Des Moines’ Ballet II program will help spread the word about dance.
“I’ve never seen talent like this in my life, especially in a smaller community,” she said. “It’s amazing credibility. The talent we have here is exquisite and something that is really special.”

Although participation numbers have yet to be finalized, a select number of performers will also dance at the finals on June 20. Mediacom plans to broadcast the finals event at a later date. During the broadcast, viewers will also have the opportunity to vote for their “Fan Favorite.”

Proceeds from this year’s event will benefit Ballet Des Moines as it hopes to possibly hire full-time dance instructors. Ballet Des Moines, which is located in East Village, is a non-profit organization, and Harrington says every little bit helps.
“We’re extremely excited for the Dance Off as it brings in a lot of talent,” Harrington said. “The proceeds will help support the organization so we can launch a company that can call Des Moines home.” CV

Dance contest coming to Prairie Meadows

Prairie Meadows will host the first Des Moines Dance Off in June, with a $2,500 purse.
“It’s open to individuals, teams, groups and all dance styles you can imagine,” said Katherine Harrington, Des Moines Dance Off director.
Competitors age 8 and above will start with a tryout on Sunday, June 13, under the watch of regional dance teachers who will serve as judges.
The tryouts already have attracted much interest, Harrington said.
“We actually have gotten inquiries from out of state and really from all over, and the word’s kind of spread like wildfire,” she said.
The finals have been set for Sunday, June 20. Tickets are $7 at the door. The performances will be taped to air on Mediacom. Viewers, then, will be able to vote for the “fan favorite.”
Winners will earn cash prizes.
“It’s going to be based on how many people try out, because that will really determine how many winners we have,” Harrington said. “We do want to have as many people win as possible, to encourage people to enter.”
According to the website www.desmoinesdanceoff.org, the entry fee is $20 for a solo and $15 per person for an ensemble through Saturday, May 1, and the maximum fee is $150 per ensemble. Costs will increase $5 for the late entry deadline of Saturday, May 15, and the maximum fee for an ensemble will increase to $200.

The site also lists the dance categories. Both the solo and ensemble competitions will be divided into groups for age 8-13 and 14 and up, and the dancer’s age is as of Jan. 1 of this year.
The event will benefit Ballet Des Moines, which features professional dancers and a pre-professional troupe.
“Ballet Des Moines is a ballet company, so we have performances in Des Moines at Hoyt Sherman Place twice a year,” said Harrington, who is president of the organization’s board.
Ballet Des Moines has helped launch young dancers who go on to make a living with their talents, Harrington said.
“Most of them will, actually, be professional and live in big cities like New York City and San Francisco, and they’ll make ballet a career,” she said. “They’re that good.”
Harrington said props are welcome at the Des Moines Dance Off to support the acts.
“They can bring whatever they think enhances the dance, as long as it’s not dangerous,” she said. “No fire, and we’re good.”
