Design Statement:
The purpose of this project is to implement hardware in the loop control for traffic control purposes. We will be using the Vissim software package to simulate traffic at a location in which a freeway ramp meter is in close proximity to two or more surface street intersections.  We will then be designing modules that replicate the ramp meter and two other intersections. These modules will be complete with programming, communication, and display functionality. From that point, we will attempt to establish a communication link between the Vissim simulation and the modules to achieve true HILS with compact testing modules.

Abstract:

The need for system analysis tools in the field of transportation engineering is receiving considerable amounts of attention throughout America. The simulation modeling of complex transportation systems combined with configurable hardware modules will enhance traffic control in urban areas. This will be accomplished by using the Vissim software program that can simulate traffic in a known area. With the software in place the data will then be transmitted to individual modules. A major goal is to have a communication link between two or more of the modules so that real time decisions can be made about the current traffic conditions. After the system is designed and implemented traffic engineers will be able to have a complex, but compact tool to test system parameters for the control cabinets that control the hardware at intersections across the nation.
