Generation No. 3 aka my Great-Grandparents Alberta Homestead Records search for Ben Mellott ~ Benjamin MellottBenjamin Smith Mellott & Millie K Lundwill
My Great-Grandparents were Benjamin and Millie Mellott. Benjamin Smith Mellott was born on July 2, 1889 in Kingman, Kansas. Millie K Lundwill was born April 13, 1894 in Denmark. (Name Notes: 1- In the book "The Descendants of Jacob John Schaub" Millie is listed as Kameli Lundwill; 2- In the 1910 US Census Millie's name appears to read as Millie K Lundville.) In the 1910 US Census which was enumerated in April both Millie (census record) and Ben (census record) are listed as living in Jones, Major, Oklahoma with their parents; they were married later that year in Oklahoma. In 1912 Ben and Millie moved to Boyle, Alberta. Ben & Millie are listed in the 1916 Canada Census as living at 64, 21, 4, Cartier with their sons: Charles and Rennie. (Note: Ben's brother Jerry appears on the same page of the 1916 Census) In 1922 they moved back to Oklahoma, and back again to Boyle in about 1924. Ben and Millie had five children. The oldest child was Charles Christian Mellott who was born February 21, 1912 in USA, and died February 18, 1974; Charles in buried in Beechmount Cemetery in Edmonton, Alberta. The 2nd child was Renn Chester Mellott who was born in about 1916 in Alberta, and died November 26, 1988 in Nanaimo, BC. The 3rd child Luther Martin Mellott was born October 27, 1917 in Colinton, Alberta; he died August 10, 1999. The 4th child Dale Leroy Mellott was born May 17, 1922 in Sherman, Oklahoma; he died July 23, 2000 in Grassland, Alberta. The youngest child Glade Glen Mellott was born October 27, 1925 and he passed away April 8, 2009. Millie used the money from her fathers estate to purchase the interests of the other 2 children (Hans & Bertha) in her father’s dwelling, and 3 lots in the Village of Boyle, which Millie became the registered owner of in 1942. Ben and Millie separated in about 1947. Millie stayed in Boyle while Benjamin moved to British Columbia. Millie earned a living by providing board and lodging for persons living in Boyle, while Ben was primarily a farmer but also worked as a carpenter. Milled passed away on January 21, 1969 in Boyle, Alberta and is buried in Boyle Cemetery beside her parents. Benjamin died on February 10, 1971 in Murrayville, British Columbia. Generation No. 4 aka my Great-Great-Grandparents Charles & Rhoda Cabeth Mellott Benjamin’s parents were Charles & Rhoda Cabeth Mellott. Charles was born December 1859 in Ohio (Note: In the 1900 Census Charles' birth places is listed as Ohio; In the 1910 Census Ben's father's birthplace is listed as Iowa) and died between June 1900 and May 1910. (Note: Charles as alive when the 1900 Census was enumerated in June of 1900; Rhoda is listed as a widow in the 1910 Census which was enumerated in May 1910) Rhoda was born November 1864 in Indiana, and died unknown. I have found a record of a marriage between Charles Mellott, age 26, and Rhoda C. Hill, age 20 on November 16, 1886 in Irene, Pratt County, Kansas, which I believe to be them. In the 1900 US Census Charles and Rhoda are listed as living at Bishop Township (North Half), Woods, Oklahoma Territory on a farm which they own. The 1900 US Census (census record) also says that they have been married for 13 years which matches the aforementioned marriage of 1886, and that Rhoda was the mother of four children and that 3 of them were still alive: Ben, Hazel, and Jerry. Hazel's marriage record of 1906 lists Rhoda (R C Mellott) but makes no mention of Charles; it is currently a mystery who the witness Henry Mellott is. In the 1910 US Census Rhoda is listed as a widow living with her son Ben S Mellott. The 1910 Census also states that Rhoda was the mother of four children and that three of them were still alive. Jerry's attestation paper for World War I lists his mother as Mrs Roday Casey Bolar, I can only assume this is Rhoda so it looks like she remarried some time between 1910 and 1918, in this document her address is Waynoka, Oklahoma. Children:
Benjamin - see Generation No. 3 Hazel - Hazel Mellott was born September 1890 in Kansas. Hazel married George Philer (spelling?) in 1906. (marriage record) Hazel is listed in the 1920 Census (census record) with her husband George and their 3 children Blanche (age 12), Dorothy (age 9), and Harold (age 7). It is unknown when Hazel died. Jerry - Jerry Charles Mellott born April 24, 1892 (or 1893), and according to the write up in Colinton & Districts : Yesterday & Today by his wife Marian he went by his middle name Charles. Jerry is listed in the 1916 Canada Census as Jerry Chas Mellott, occupation farmer, living at 64, 21, 4 and his Year of immigration to Canada is listed as 1911. Jerry was drafted in 1917 and is described as having brown hair and blue eyes with a scar on his left foot. Jerry married Marian Hess in 1927, and together they had 4 children. Jerry died in 1944 and is buried in Edmonton. Unknown - The only information I have on this child is that it died before 1900. Generation No. 4 aka my Great-Great-Grandparents
Millie’s parents were Christian & Maren Jacobsen. Hans Christian Jacobsen was born in 1860, and died May 26, 1939 in Athabasca, Alberta. Maren K., she was born in 1856, and died January 24, 1936 in Boyle, Alberta. Christian is listed in the 1900 Census (census record). They are listed in the 1910 Census as living in Jones, Major, Oklahoma on a farm with Millie. The 1910 US Census also says that they have been married for 10 years, with Christian being on his 1st marriage and Maren being on her 2nd marriage, and that Maren was the mother of six children and that four of them were still alive. It is unknown who Maren's 1st husband was other then his last name being Lundwill. Maren's probate (1936) lists those 4 children as: Jurgen M. Rasmus (daughter - age 54 - Denmark), Hans Jurgen Lundwill (son - age 51 - Edmonton), Bertha Madsen (daughter - age 49 - Boyle), and Millie Mellott (daughter - age 41 - Boyle). In their later years the Jacobsen's resided in Boyle and they are buried in the Boyle Cemetery; their headstone reads: "In Death They Were Not Divided". Children: Jurgen - Jurgen M. Lundwill was born about 1882, she is also listed as Jurgen Rasmus so I am assuming that is her married name. Maren's probate lists her as a beneficiary and includes the following: "AND UPON BEING SATISFIED that the only remaining beneficiary of the within estate is Jurgen R. Lundwill, who is resident of the Kingdom of Denmark, being a country which is at present occupied by the armed forces of Germany". Christian's probate does not list Jurgen as a beneficiary, so the question is did she die between 1936 and 1939? Hans - Hans Jurgen Lundwill was born about 1885. Hans was the executor of both Chris & Maren's estates and is listed as living in Edmonton at that time. Hans appears to be listed in the 1916 Census, I will hopefully confirm this soon. There is an obituary in the May 16, 1977 edition of the Edmonton Journal for a H.J. Lundwill which is likely him as it coincides with a death listed in the BC Archives for Hans Jurgen Lundwill on May 13, 1977. Bertha - Bertha Lundwill was born in
about 1887. Bertha was 1st married to James Allen Wilson who died in
1918 they had two sons together. Bertha then married Christian Madsen
(1885-1971) in 1921, they had two sons together. Bertha passed away in
1957. Millie - see
Generation No. 3 Western Land Grants (1870-1930) returns the following legal land description for Christian Jacobsen: Part NE, Section 20, Township 64, Range 20, Meridian W4; which if I did my conversion correctly is about 15km SW of Boyle; see map here: View Larger Map
Note: There are pictures of Mrs. Jacobsen/Jacobson in Forests, Furrows And Faith but I am unsure if she is any relation to Christian. Generation No. 5 aka my Great-Great-Great-Grandparents The only clue so far for these ancestors is the listing of Charles parents birth locations in the 1900 US Census, it lists his Father's birthplace as Pennsylvania and his Mother's birthplace as Ohio. Generation No. 5 aka my Great-Great-Great-Grandparents I am 99% sure Rhoda's parents are John Quincy Hill & Cassandra Magruder. Possible Ancestors? Recently Diane Mellott contacted me about the Mellott Family Tree, she mentioned some family folk lore about three Mellott brothers who fought with the Lafayette in the American Revolutionary War. Apparently this folk lore as been passed down in the family for some time. So the question is are these Mellott brothers possible ancestors? I did an Internet search and found the following information: John Mellott (1725-1786) & Sarah Stilwell (1731-1812) were married in 1751. They had 7 children: Theodore Dory (1752-1840), John (1753-1835), Obediah (1755-1828), Benjamin (1759-1828), Jacob (1762-1845), Joseph (1765-Unknown), and Francis (1775-1809). Three of their sons Theodore, Benjamin and Jacob are listed as Revolutionary War Veterans. Historical Documents:
