Text for the course: "Abstract Algebra", by David S.Dummit and Richard M.Foote. John Wiley and Sons (2004) Plan of the course: The course will be mainly concentrated on the notion of a group. Starting from the idea of symmetry, we will go through axiomatic description of groups, consider important examples such as permutation, dihedral and matrix groups, and discuss homomorphisms and representations of groups. Then we will study subgroups and their role in determining the structure of groups and group actions, finishing with Lagrange, Isomorphism, and Sylow's theorems. If time permits we will also discuss some topics from ring theory. |
