I can not possibly cover all the different router configurations there are to choose from. I have chosen a NETGEAR router for a quick sample of how to forward ports. You can always find information on how to forward ports for your make and model of router at Port Forward.com Before you can can forward ports for Utorrent, you need to know what ports Utorrent is using. Below are screenshots on how to do that. Open up Utorrent. 1. Click Options in the menu at the top of your screen. In the drop down box click Preferences.  2. Click Connection on the left hand side of the Utorrent program. You will see the menu shown in the screenshot below. Make sure the Enable UPnP box is unchecked. The number in the Port Used for Incoming Connections box contains the port you will need to forward. You can change the port number, if you like. Choose a port number between 49512 and 65535 (which is the recommended range) I always have a look on this page and make sure not to choose a port that is used by trojans. Enter the port you chose into the box below. ( your port number may be different than mine, that is ok, just make sure the utorrent port and router port forwarded are the same when you get to your router ) Take note of your port in Utorrent at this point, go ahead and leave Utorrent open and proceed to the next step.  3. Now its time to forward the Utorrent port in your router. A) Your computer may need a STATIC IP address to forward ports. (You may or may not already have a static ip) You can accomplish this by following the guide located here. When you are finished, return here and follow the screenshots below for a Netgear Router. B) I have a Netgear router so I chose the make and model of my router from this page on port forward.com I will show as an example how to forward ports for the Netgear MR814. You will have to choose the make and model of the router you are using and follow that guide. Do not skip this step!Please enter the static ip you want to forward to:  Open a web browser like Internet Explorer or firefox.
Enter the ip address of your router in the address bar of your browser. In the picture above the address bar has http://192.168.0.1 in it. For Netgear routers this is the default address to access your router. By default the ip address should be set to 192.168.0.1.  You should see a box prompting you for your username and password. Enter your username and password now. By default the username is admin, and the password is password. Click the Ok button to log in to your router.  Click on ADD CUSTOM SERVICE at the bottom of the screen to see the picture below.  Enter Utorrent in the SERVICE NAME BOX Enter the port number you chose earlier from Utorrent in the STARTING PORT and ENDING PORT boxes Enter your STATIC IP or LAN IP in the SERVER IP ADDRESS box Click APPLY That's it ! You have forwarded your Utorrent Port ! You can close your router settings page. Remember, things might be slightly different for each make and model of a router. If you follow the guides for your router on port forward.com, any slight difference for that make or model will be explained there. 4. Time to check and make sure all is well.
We need to go back to the Utorrent program and choose OPTIONS > SPEED GUIDE  Choose TEST IF PORT IS FORWARDED PROPERLY  You will be directed to a web which will tell you if you have forwarded the utorrent ports properly or not.
 If you see the message above all is well. Once your ports are forwarded, you need to Configure Utorrent. |
