Note that the difference in mileage is from a detour through the city, which is not noted on the mapmyrun map.

Aid Stations/Cutoff:

There will be four aid stations used to bridge the two parts of the trail that do not have public water access for 20+ miles. In addition there will be unmanned drop stations along the course to provide water and fuel. There will be several check points to verify the progress of the participants.

General Instructions and Directions for the Runners(Counterclockwise)

Start will be in the Okee Tantie Campgrounds. There will be an area designated for parking for the runners and their vehicles.

Once you start you will be heading south. You will have to cross a bridge then leap over the guard rail to access the levee and will stay on it until the INDIAN PRAIRIE CANAL (about 10 miles) and the first aid station. Here you will cross the bridge and head back to the levee.

The next key feature will be HARNEY POND (another 8 miles) another aid station and another bridge to cross. Next on the list is LAKEPORT (about the 22 mile mark). Here you will exit the dike and run on the road for about 3 miles before you can get back on the dike at Nicodemus Slough. The key here is to access the dike on your left. If you cross the road and head west we won’t see you again in this lifetime. Continue on the dike to the west side of MOORE HAVEN, about 6 miles down the line. Here you will have to drop off the dike and run through the town, go over a bridge and get back on the dike. It is about a 3 mile jaunt through Moore Haven and it will be marked with flour or chalk. Now you have a straight shot to Uncle Joe’s Fish Camp/LIBERTY POINT then about a 5 mile shot to CLEWISTON, WEST. The view along here will be impressive. Now it is time for another jaunt through town, marked with chalk or flour, that is a short mile and a half. When you get back on the dike you are at 48 miles.

Continue the southeastern trek to the S-236 PUMP HOUSE (unmanned aid station) and on to JOHN STRETCH PARK . Another 5 miles down the line is SOUTH BAY and where you will, finally, turn north. Run past Belle Glade and PAUL RARDIN PARK. Next stop is PAHOKEE then on to CANAL POINT.  Get plenty of fuel here because the next stop is PORT MAYACA, 11 miles up the road, and there is no easy to find access point until you get there. At PORT MAYACA you will have to exit the levee and go over a large bridge. The good news is you can not miss the bridge, The bad news is you can’t avoid the bridge. It is here, at PORT MAYACA, we will start the sweep with the last runner. You are close to 90 miles into the run and are almost home.

Next stop and access point is CHAUNCEY BAY, 8 miles up the dike with no access point until you arrive. Another 6 miles further will be HENRY CREEK, the next access point. NUBBIN SLOUGH is another 3.4 miles and will be an unmanned aid station. About 2 and half miles further is TAYLOR CREEK where you will have to cross a narrow bridge that, depending upon what time you cross, will have a lot of traffic. Take it slowly and you will be fine.  There is another access point where Rte 441 intersections Rte 78 otherwise you have just over 6 miles to the finish at OKEE TANTIE.

Directions for the Crew Members

Since you will not be on the levee the description of the structures being past by the runners will have little relevance to you. You need to know the roads and turnoffs.

The runners will head south, from the Okee-Tantie Campgrounds by going over a bridge and leaping over the guard rail to access the dike and scenic trail. You might as well head south on Rte 78 for 10 miles to the Indian Prairie Canal. Just over the bridge there is a road that leads to a parking lot. Nice place to fuel the runners.

Oh, by the way, you have just left cell phone country and will be in blackout mode until Moore Haven. Communications will be by the HAM operators only on this stretch.

After that the S-129 Pump House is about 3.3 miles down the road. No real parking lot and a hard turn to find but it is an access.

Next on the list is Harney Pond just 4.6 miles away. It has a nice parking lot and access to the runners.

The thriving metropolis of Lakeport is 3.9 miles down Rte 78. The runners have to leave the dike and follow the road for 3.1 miles. A Marathon Store is located here for extra junk food. Please do not follow the runners with your vehicle as traffic tends to speed through here. Instead go down to the parking lot near sportsmens’ village and watch them go back on the dike at Nicodemus Slough and the C-5 Structure.

The next access point is the C-41 Canal but it is a toughy. Best way to find it is to watch for where the dike starts heading away from the road. That means you missed it so turn around and look for a chain barrier. Otherwise go down to Moore Haven. You will follow Rte 78 and it will intersect US 27. Turn left to Moore Haven. This is exciting because, as you approach the big bridge in Moore Haven you have to get on the left side of it(North) and you are traveling in the south lane. At any rate cross over and continue a few blocks then turn right and dead-end into 1st street. Turn left and follow it until it dead-ends into Tobias Avenue. Turn right and follow up to the parking lot. The runners will be coming off the dike above you at the security booth. You can cross the bridge and follow them to the east side if you wish for another fueling opportunity.

Next is the scenic Liberty Point access and Uncle John’s Fish Camp. Travel down US 27 to Rte 720. Turn left and jar your eyeteeth as you travel the road to Griffin Road. Turn left and follow to Liberty Point. Continue right up onto the dike where there is a small parking lot.

After this pleasant interlude follow Griffin Road and turn left. Follow Rte720 and it will intersect US 27. Turn left again and Clewiston will show up shortly. Go to about the middle of town and you will see a sign sending you to the left and to the dike. It is at a traffic light and is Francisco St N. Follow to almost the end then turn left on to Hoover Dike  Street and it will take you to a nice park. The runners will, again, be tracking you out and will cross a bridge then enter the US Army Corps of Engineers Compound to get back to the trail. As you head east on US 27 the next access point is the S-236 Pump House. No parking lot but you can get up to the runners. It is 4.6 miles from Clewiston. Next stop is John Stretch Park. You’ll like it and it is easy to see from the road. It has a rest room and that is a good place to park since the runners will go by you to get to the foot bridge. Still on US 27 go to South Bay Park, another 5 miles.  At this point the runners turn North and you head South. Follow US 27 to where 80 heads east (By the way plenty of places to get more supplies around here if you didn’t get them in Clewiston). Go east on Rte 80 to Rte 715. Head north on Rte 715. In Belle Glade you can turn left on Canal Street and meet the runners at Slim’s Fish Camp or, as I would suggest, continue up to Paul Rardin Park. You can drive right up to the dike or stop at a picnic bench just below it. Probably dark by now so please drive carefully. The sugar cane trucks won’t so you have to watch out for them. Continuing up Rte 715, you will meet again in Pahokee. It will be a left turn then stright up to the dike. Next is Canal Point, only a short 3.5 miles up the road, but they will need the aid since the next time you will meet will be 11 miles up the road at Port Mayaca. By the way, at Canal Point Rte 715 and 441 meet. Go up Rte 441 to the Port. The Port is another place they really have a major detour so you can meet them on both sides to make sure they are properly fueled and hydrated both setting off again. After Port Mayaca you go to Chancey Bay, 7.7 miles away. Next stop is the Henry Creek lock, another 6.2 miles. The last of the long stretches. Nubbins Slough, 3.4 miles, is the next public access point. Then another 2.6 miles to Taylor’s Creek. Here the runners will cross a narrow bridge that sees lots of traffic. You can meet your runner where Rte 441 and Rte 78 intersect(probably 2 miles) then the next stop will be the Okee-Tantie Campgrounds and the finish. We will have the runners come off the dike and finish near the starting line.

Rules

1) Runners are encouraged to have a crew. There will be adequate water sources on the course but few stations to supply food, salt, sugar, and other fuels that ultra-runners partake of to feed their bodies.
2) Pacers are allowed to join the runners at any point on the course but would suggest not joining the runners until about 50 miles or when darkness falls. This would be around Clewiston (47.5 miles).
3) Aid stations, communication stations, and other manned spots will be closed down based on the runners maintaining a 34 hour finish time pace (17:17 per mile).
4) No runner will be disqualified based on not maintaining a 34 hour finish time but be aware of #3.
5) If, in the opinion of run management, a runner is incapable of finishing, due to a physical injury or some condition that would question the runner’s decision making capacity, that decision is final. This decision can be made at any manned aid station by the aid station personnel.
6) There will be run management team members assigned to follow the last runner if that runner does not have a crew.
7) If you drop out you must notify run management of your decision so we do not mount a search for you in the local alligator bellies. A map showing the location of reporting stations will be available at the pre-race packet handout and information meeting Friday evening.
8) Due to construction and other various situations there will be detours. They will be outlined at the pre-race meeting and to the best of run management’s ability, marked with directional signs. Due to the high volume of vehicular, bicycle, and foot traffic run management cannot guarantee the signs will remain intact. Because of the possible removal of directional signage and the basic simplicity of the course runners will be given ample leeway to make their own course without fear of disqualification.
9) I was going to put in a rule that the runners cannot advance using bicycles, vehicles, or boats but don’t want to insult you. It is expected that if you are running this race, you are honest and, if not, that is your problem.

Thank you for participating and have a good time!
