Galena is a great place to live. My wife and I first visited Galena in the summer of 2005 while on a business/vacation trip to Chicago from Arizona. I commented to my wife that it seemed like a nice town to live in. In 2007 I moved to Galena after my wife and separated ( I believe someday we'll be reunited ).
The first thing that impressed me was the small town atmosphere of Galena, people were friendly and kind, it's quite and peaceful. The second thing that impressed me was that ( in the summer ) Galena has a big town atmophere and becomes a bustling tourist community. I knew that President Grants Home was in Galena but was surprised at the interest people from around the world had in President Grant and civil war history. Besides President Grant there were eight other civil war generals who were from or lived in Galena. Galena accommodates an estimated one million tourists/visitors during the summer months !! Not too bad for a town with a residency of three thousand ! We have a first class local newspaper to keep us abreast of local, county and state news The Galena Gazette. By coincidence I share the same name and love for photography as one of the staff.
I took the photo below and had a little fun manipulating it with my photo program. I believe this is overlooking Market street. The building in the foreground is the roof of a working blacksmith shop which is open only during the summer tourist season. Market street also has a Museum that displays an exhibit of President Grants Life and his time in Galena, I believe it,s the Old Market House. There is also a small Art Gallery on Spring street that exhibits work done by local artists.
