Google Earth Traveling Instructions

Congratulations on your decision to use Google Earth!  You are in for a fun, wild ride!!!

1)      If you do not have Google Earth, you will need to download the program.  It is free and located at http://earth.google.com/ .

2)       If you are in need of basic instructions as to how to use Google Earth, they have a fantastic tutorial site complete with videos. The site address is:   http://earth.google.com/userguide/v4/  .

3)      Each day the KML file that you will need for your Google Earth trip will be posted on the Virtual Field Trip website. 

To open these files:

a.       Double click on the link to the KMZ.  (It will usually say click here)

b.      Select Save. 

c.       Close the dialogue box.

d.      Locate the compressed file.

e.      Right click on the compressed file.  (It usually looks like a file folder with a zipper on it.)

f.        Select Extract All (A file extraction wizard will pop up.)

g.       Select Next

h.      Select Next

i.         Click Finish

A file folder with a KMZ icon that says doc will appear.  Double click on that icon.  The trip should then open up in Google Earth.

4)      To hear a narrated tour of the country we are visiting:

a.       In the menu on the left hand side of the screen, find the Temporary Places

b.      The tour should be under temporary places.

c.       Then, expand the menu by clicking on the little plus sign.

d.      Make sure all of the attractions are checked.

e.      Highlight the tour option with the little video camera next to it.

f.        Press Play.

 

5)       If you wish to stop at a place marker to browse the location

a.       Press the pause button on the bottom of the screen.  This will stop the audio tour.

b.      Click on the place marker bubble.

c.       Click on the appropriate links if offered.

To optimize your trip, make sure you have your Google Earth set to the following settings.

6)       To adjust your settings

a.       Select Tools

b.      Select Options

c.       Click on the Touring Tab

d.      Select the following settings:

7)      If you want to see the buildings and terrain in 3D (Highly Recommended), please select the 3D Buildings and Terrain under the Layers Column.
