 50TH ANNUAL DUTCHESS COUNTY SCIENCE FAIR AWARD INFORMATION


There were 226 students from 36 schools in Dutchess County at the 50th
Annual Dutchess County Regional Science Fair held at Dutchess Community
College, Poughkeepsie, NY on April 4, 2009.  Each student received a
50th Anniversary Science Fair T-shirt, a certificate of achievement
co-signed by Ivar Giaever, 1973 Nobel Laureate in Physics and Stephanie
D. Wilson, NASA Astronaut, a 50th Anniversary Science Fair ball-pen and
a 2009 Science Fair Finalist ribbon.  There were 116 invited judges and
approximately 70 special judges.

A total of 223 awards and certificates were presented.  There were 61
competitive awards and 161 special awards.  The special awards were
given by 58 international, national and local organizations and local
individuals and included cash, savings bonds, gift certificates,
medallions, polo shirts, bags, calculators, MP3 players, astronomy
gifts, etc.  The total value of cash, savings bonds and gift
certificates alone was almost four thousand dollars.

The Senior Division First Place Grand Award winner was Laya Varanasi
from Ketcham high School.  Her winning project was "An Innovative Method
to Improve Yields of Biodiesel".  She will receive an all expense paid
trip to compete at the International Science and Engineering Fair in
Reno, Nevada on May 10-15, 2009 against approximately 1600 students from
over 60 countries.

DEFINITION AND PURPOSE

The Dutchess County Regional Science Fair is affiliated with the International Science and Engineering Fair.

The purpose of the fair is threefold: to stimulate in young people an active interest in science and engineering; to provide an educational experience through being exposed to the judges and other exhibits; and to give public recognition to talented students for the work they have done.

It is a competition based on the quality of projects done by the students, the results of which are reported through exhibits and oral presentations.

 

ELIGIBILITY AND CATEGORIES

The Dutchess County Regional Science Fair is open to all qualified students from fifth through 12th grades attending any public, private, parochial or home school in Dutchess County.  In order to qualify, students must be top place winners in their local science fairs.

The categories are as follows:
Biology; Chemistry; Physics; Mathematics; Computer Science; Engineering; earth and Space Sciences; Environmental Sciences; Behavioral and Social Sciences

All official entry forms and registration fees must be received before noon on Saturday, March 21, 2009 at the following address:  if necessary, please hand deliver to Arlington post office on Raymond Avenue, Poughkeepsie, NY

The registration fee is $25.00 (twenty five dollars) for individual projects and $20.00 (twenty dollars) each member for team projects.  Checks should be made payable to:

Entry forms will be given to top place winners by the local science fair coordinator,  Registrations by e-mail will NOT be accepted.
