“ Brilliant Life” Project – Care for the Kowloon City Community Service Learning Project Brief Background : Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui Lok Man Alice Kwok Integrated Service Centre has been serving the Kowloon City Community for 35 years. With the insight that although most of the elders we serve come from low income group, who are lack of social support, have lower self-care abilities, they can still contribute the community through their sharing of life histories. Moreover, with a common vision to establish a caring network in the district, we collaborate with the community partners, i.e. the church members, the schools, volunteers and service organizations etc. Voluntary friendly visits, telephone contacts and publication of the life stories of the elders and the experience of the volunteers would be the best means for achieving the goals. With the joint efforts from Sheng Kung Hui Church of Good Shepherd, this project is tailor-made for Diocesan Boys’ School Boarding School to provide service opportunities for the boarders. The participants of this service project are expected to have a wide horizon about the histories and daily living of the elders who reside in Lok Man Sun Chuen, a public estate nearby. Through regular telephone contacts and visits, the boarders are expected to show their care and concern for the elders, and, in return, they will learn the living wisdom and cultural heritage from the elders. Objectives : 1. For the boarder, to learn the life stories and wisdoms of the elders and to serve and show care as well as concerns for them; 2. For the community, to establish community care network for the elders living in Lok Man Sun Chuen through regular visits and telephone contacts; 3. To help publicize the positive image of the elders by consolidating the living wisdom and cultural heritage of them through the publication of booklets.
