Schon lange wollte ich gerne Kamele auf dem Spieltisch haben und hatte mir darum eine Later Pre-Islamic Arab Armee von Essex bestellt. Als ich die Figuren dann in natura sah, war ich etwas enttäuscht: Zwölf Kamele mit Reitern - alle in derselben Pose. Inspiriert durch die LPIA Armee von Jeff Franz, begann ich die Kamelfiguren und deren Reiter nach meinen Wünschen umzubauen, siehe Fotos.

For a long time, I had wished to have an army with camelry elements and thus ordered a Later Pre-Islamic Arab army from Essex Miniatures. When I finally had them in my hands, I was rather disappointed; twelve camels with their riders - all of them in the same pose. It was Jeff Franz's LPIA army which inspired me to morph them according to my ideas. You can see the results below.

Die Bevölkerung der arabischen Halbinsel bestand im Altertum aus zwei Gruppen: Beduinen, welche ein nomadisches Leben in Zelten aus Kamel- oder Ziegenhaar führten und Hadari, die sesshaft in aus Lehm gebauten Dörfern und Städten lebten. Die Beduinen lebten von Kamel-, Ziegen- und Schafzucht, Jagd und Handel. Ihre Lebensgrundlage war das Kamel. Als perfekt an die extremen klimatischen Bedingungen angepasste Kreatur, diente es den Beduinen nicht nur als Reit- und Transportmittel, sondern lieferte auch Fleisch, Milch, Leder, Dünger, Wolle und spendete Schatten.  Die Beduinenstämme bewohnten die zentralen Wüstenregionen der arabischen Halbinsel, während die Siedlungen der sesshaften Bevölkerung sich in den Küstenregionen des Roten Meeres, des indischen Ozeans und des Persischen Golfs befanden.
Die nomadischen Beduinen hatten auch eine kriegerische Seite. Sie überfielen benachbarte Beduinenstämme oder Siedlungen und plünderten Handelskarawanen aus.

In DBA treten die frühen Beduinen mit der Liste I/6abc Early Bedouin in Erscheinung. Pferde kamen im 4. Jh.v.Chr. nach Arabien. Da sie schneller waren als Kamele, hatten ihre Besitzer bei Überfällen einen grossen Vorteil. Die anspruchsvolle Haltung machte Pferde aber nur für die Reichsten erschwinglich. Mit der Verbreitung der Pferde in der arabischen Welt beginnt die Armeeliste II/23a der nomadischen Araber. Sie werden im Laufe der kommenden Jahrhunderte mit allen ihren Nachbarn in kriegerische Auseinandersetzungen verwickelt: An den Küsten im Westen und Süden sind es die bereits erwähnten Überfälle auf die Dörfer und Städte der sesshaften Araber und Yemeniten. Im Norden werden die Beduinen Zeuge der grossen Kriege zwischen den hellenistisch-römisch-byzantinischen und den parthisch-sassanidischen Kulturen. Mit Ausnahme des Feldzugs des Römers Aelius Gallus im 1. Jh.v.Chr. wird das arabische Kernland ("arabia deserta") nicht bedroht. Hingegen nehmen nomadische Reiter mit Kamelen und Pferden auf Seiten der Römer wie auch auf Seiten der Parther und Sassaniden an deren Kriegen teil.

Mit der raschen Verbreitung des Islam im 7.Jh.n.Chr. endet die Armeeliste der nomadischen Araber und geht über in die Liste III/25 Arab Conquest.

In ancient times the population of the arabian penisula was made up of two distinct groups: The bedouins, which lived a nomadic life in tents of camel or goat hair and the hadari, settled people living in villages and towns of adobe houses. The bedouins made a living from breeding camels, goats and sheep, hunting and trading. Their basis of live was the camel. As a creature perfectly adapted to the extreme conditions of the arabian desert, it served not only for riding and transport but also gave its owner meat, milk, leather, manure, wool and - last but not least - shadow. The bedouin tribes inhabited the central desert regions of the arabian peninsula, while the settlements of the the sedentary people could be found along the coasts of the Red Sea, the Indian Ocean and the Persian Gulf.
Besides their peacuful husbandry activities, the bedouins raided neighbouring tribes and settlements for loot and hostages and they were a constant threat to caravans which moved north with far east goods from the Yemeni port cities.

In DBA the bedouins make an appearance with army list I/6abc Early Bedouin. Horses came to Arabia in the 4th century BC. Since they were speedier than camels, their owners had an advantage in raids. But keeping horses in a desert environment was demanding and expensive and limited their use to the wealthy. Army list II/23a of the pre-islamic arabian nomads starts with the increasing use of horses. In the centuries to come, the nomads go to war with all their neighbours: On the western and southern coasts it is the aforementioned raiding of Arab and Yemenite villages and towns. In the north, the bedouins witness the great wars between the hellenistic-roman-byzantine and the parthian-sasanid cultures. There have been no foreign threats to their homelands - with one exception: In the 1st century BC the roman Aelius Gallus invades "arabia deserta" with very little success. On the other hand, the nomads participate in the great wars as mounted warriors both on the roman as on the parthian and sasanid side.

It is the fast spread of the new islamic faith in the 7th century AD that ends the army list of the nomadic bedouins and starts list III/25 Arab Conquest.
