Wicked is a famous musical by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman. The story in Wicked is based on a novel called "Wicked: the Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West." It is actually a perspective from the witches of the Land of Oz.

Wicked tells about Elphaba, the upcoming Wicked Witch of the West and her struggles with Glinda, the Good Witch of the North. They have different personalities and views, along with being in love with the ame person and Elphaba's public fall from grace. The plot of the story is actually mostly before Dorothy's arrival from Kansas. It, however, does include references to the much beloved film "The Wizard of Oz" which was made in 1939.

The musical, Wicked, began on Broadway on October 30, 2003. Universal Pictures produced Wicked and it was directed by Joe Mangello. Wayne Cilento did the musical staging. Some of the original stars in the first Broadway production of Wicked were: Joel Grey (The Wizard of Oz), Kristin Chenoweth (Glinda) and Idina Menzal (Elphaba). Although this production received different and mixed reviews, it has been a continuing favorite among its audiences.

Wicked's popularity and success spawned other productions in Los Angeles, Chicago, London, Tokyo and Stuttgart as well as a tour of North America that has been to over 30 North American and Canadian cities.

Some interesting facts about each Wicked production include:

- In each production, actors make as many as eight changes and about 70 wigs are used altogether. There are also over 200 individually designed and fitted costumes used in each performance of Wicked, which means there are very frequent costume changes. Also, 179 different types of leather are used as trim for each costume, shoe, and hat. Each wig is made to order and can run between $1,200 to $2,400 each. And, in the first quick change, 17 actors change from the mob scene to University students in a short 1.5 minutes (that's 90 seconds) Amazing!!!

- Some of the tunes are similiar and most patrons will recognize the many similiarities. Wow, I can't wait!!

- The electrics department in a single performance uses enough electricity to power about 12 houses. If you ad in the automation and sound departments, then you could light up and run 18 houses. The electric department uses 4 - 5 miles of cable to set up Wicked. Spectacular!!

- One thousand feet of steel cable has been needed to restring the flying monkey wings each year Wicked is on the road. Holy Moses!!!

- The wingspan of the Dragon in Wicked is the same as a Cessna 172 and it's eyes are made from bulbs that will never burn out (LED bulbs) Wow!!

- Eight main characters star in the musical production of Wicked, however, the book its based on had a whopping 38 characters. The original Glinda from Broadway can now be seen on NBC's West Wing. The name Elphaba (the Wicked Witch) is actually a form of the original author's name, L. Frank Baum (eL-Fa-Ba). Interesting!!!
