A Brief Retrospective Examining Ten Aspects Covered in Room 319 during the 2006-2007 School Year

Creating Models Using Sketch Up

You can't sell a product if it doesn't exist...

Here are some of the models I created and uploaded during the year.

Public Corporations

Researching Public Information

During the course of the year we used the Internet to research publicly traded companies.  Because of its ease of search, I would recommend the following site.  While there are numerous sites to research stocks (money.com, marketwatch.com...), I found finance.google.com to be the least cluttered and the most intuitive.

Stock Market Competition

All Students Joined

What would you invest in with 100,000 dollars?  As I write this one student has more than doubled his initial investment.  Here's a link to the main page with our game.  Of course there is serious risk with the stock market!  Currently I am ranked in the lower 2/3s.  It seems advanced business degrees don't help much with stock picking.

StumbleUpon.com

Unearthing New Sites Socially

I've stumbled for nearly two years.  I probably learned about it through my RSS feeds.  Anyways, here is a link to my school-created StumbleUpon page.   I've discovered many, many interesting sites via StumbleUpon.  I doubt that there are many business applications to StumbleUpon, but it highlighted the ease with which add-ons can be installed on Firefox.  And it is fun for a bit.

Firefox vs. IE

Open Source vs. Micro Soft

I love tabbed browsing.  Thus when Internet Explorer added this functionality, I was very impressed.  But I am still much more comfortable with Firefox!  All the best add-ons are made by the Firefox community: FireFTP, StumbleUpon, AdBlock...The open nature of the code behind Firefox lets people all over the world make cooler ways to browse the net.  In my opinion, Firefox is the winner.

Internet Forums

Online Communities of Like-Minded People

Once I finally got the message board (or forum) to run on my server I wanted to test out my server's capabilities.  The forum generated a few interesting comments and conversations but on the whole I thought it was not better than the blog.  Read it here.

Start-Up

Delivering Plants and Trees

I didn't use OSWD for a template for my business page, I actually started with blogger.com.  So I will link to that site.  Here's where I started my online business.   Actually many people liked the simplistic nature of the site.  So I still direct some traffic there.  In fact my other site is down right now because I'm trying out a new online store.  Adwords is great because you can turn traffic on or off INSTANTLY!

My business is not flashy or glamorous but it is obviously realistic because it supplements my salary each week!

Flash

Businesses Need a Way to Get Their Message Out

Flash is used to create dynamic content online.  Here's a Flash I made after my cat got stuck up in a tree.  This is an early Flash for me.
