DualSporting Remote Baja - the second Adventure Diary CD in the series...

(Hey, who cares about Banditos anyway!)

In "Mexico Adventure" author Dave Steven writes...

"Somewhere between the guided GoldWing tours down paved Route 1 from San Diego to Cabo and the long weekend (trailer in your) dirt bike binges at Mike's Sky Rancho there exists a part of Baja that is remote, unique and very much still the 70's pre-pavement era of the peninsula.

I had a taste a few years back on my overloaded Honda TransAlp but always wanted to get further off highway and farther from the English sub-titled menus in the usual places. This past March I took three weeks to explore this other Baja. I wanted to be where motorcycles rarely are seen, where English is rarely spoken and where, if I had a breakdown, I'd definitely be abandoning the bike and hiking out.

Well, that last part is only partially true. I did buddy up with a friend on an identical bike. It did save on carrying spares! If you've read about our dual sport adventure down the Continental Divide, you will remember that mountain bicyclists inspired the trip. For this return trip to a more remote Baja, I purposely did not read the usual m/c tomes, but instead devoured books by hikers, kayakers and scuba divers. I wanted to explore small coastal villages, itinerant fish camps, and remote beaches.

Yes, I did have to stop and see Coco again, hang in my favorite town Santa Rosalia, and pet the whales one more time, but I also found a beach two hours off a dirt road where Pacific currents wash up everything that's fallen out of cruise ships. I got in arguments between my map, my internal compass and the GPS. I ran trails till they peered out and got caught well after dark with a headlight pointing skyward; sweated away gallons of perspiration and about froze to death all in the same day.

On the other hand, I had, probably, the best shrimp dinner of my life (recipe included), met some very interesting native folks and gained a whole new prospective about adventure touring on a lighter bike. I've put this all together in a 375-page book that I'm publishing on CD. It's readable on any computer (PC or Mac) using Microsoft Word or Adobe Acrobat, the later of which is usually pre-installed on your hard drive. There are so many (hundreds of) color pictures that it would end up being one of those expensive "coffee table" books if printed and hard bound.
I've also included some satellite views of places visited and reference maps of the entire trip itself; although I highly suggest you use the ones from baja-almanac.com for actual navigation. I recommend places to stay, places to eat and even what to order! I've got lists of what to bring, what to leave behind and what I forgot and wished I hadn't. If you are thinking of a trip to Baja this winter/spring, you should really read my book. I live in New York State so I've also shared all the shipping and logistics of getting you and your bike there and back home".
