my life story (or, at least, the parts I'll admit to)

David has been working in the entertainment industry for over 30 years. He began at age eight doing commercial voice work at CKGM, in Montreal. At age eleven he co-hosted a two hour daily
live variety show, called "From Hand to Mouth" on CJON-TV in Newfoundland. As a summer job, from age twelve to fourteen, he worked as rigging crew for a world-record setting highwire act.

In radio, David did freelance voicework for various Montreal production companies, including Listen Audio and Astral Belvue Pathe. At CFQR-FM he was Host/ Producer/ Researcher/ Writer/ Interviewer/ Storyteller of a weekly kids radio show. At CFOR, a country 'n' western station in Orilla, he worked as Announcer/ Operator/ Copywriter/ Technical Producer and he was a Technical Producer at 680 CFTR, in Toronto.

In theatre he was an Actor/ Stage Manager/ Musician for two seasons with the Lakeshore County Theatre, a touring musical company, in Montreal. In Orillia he was Technical Director, for Heyoka Circle Theatre, and freelanced in Toronto for several years as Carpenter/ Electric/ Sound tech/ Technical Director/ Lighting Director for many companys including TWP, YPT, Tarragon, Passe Muraille, Factory Theatre, Solar Stage and the Toronto Free Theatre

An ACTRA member for over ten years, David was the villain, in an episide of "the Littlest Hobo", the hero of an episode of "Witness to Survival" and the principal in a national ad campaign for Discount Truck Rental. He performed in corporate videos, worked as a stand-in and spent countless hours on set as an extra.

Davids' technical career in film & TV began in the early 1980s as PA for several large commercial production houses inlcuding Shultz, Shooters and TDF. He spent the next 12 years freelancing as Key Grip/ Gaffer/ Betacam Assist and Sound Recordist, for commercials, corporate, rock video and feature film. In 1996, he got an opportunity to Direct and shoot a commercial at Microforum, a multimedia/ interactive company, resulting in a year as in-house DP/ Director shooting live action and product on Betacam/ Ultimatte/ 16mm. He has been freelancing as Director of Photography (occasionally Directing and Editing) ever since. Over the last six years he has worked on documentaries, dramas, commercials and TV using everything from super8 to 35mm and in video from lipstick-cam to HighDef.

Over the years he has developed lighting techniques both fast and fancy (several of which have been widely copied, and are now in common use) designed and built several production hardware systems (dolly, jib, car mount, turntable) with more in development. David has taught lighting and cinematography at Humber College and LIFT. He maintains a collection of old Bell & Howell film cameras (nothing newer that 1950) from super-8 to 35mm.
