     Lessons Learned from the Literature

The following is a summary of my findings from my literature review:

Requirements of a literary magazine

·      Literary magazines should evolve from students' needs reflect the needs and requirements of the community it represents

·      NCTE offers guidelines for good literary magazines (through their annual contest)

·      Request copies of good examples of literary magazines before starting one

·      Expose students to different types of literary magazines before creating one

Media Center Connection

·      The media center maybe a natural fit for a literary magazine through workshops, sponsorship, distribution and/or display of magazines, provision of technology, among other services that could be offered.

Justification for Creating a Literary Magazine (How are academics and student contributions to a literary magazine interrelated?)

·      Sharing stories helps create a sense of community

·      Students need an outlet to express themselves

·      Students take more pride in their work if they know that others will read it

·      Literacy skills may be improved through reading and writing

·      Art activities like literary magazines can improve academic achievement

Technology and the Literary Magazine (How can technology such as web 2.0 tools be used to create a literary magazine? What are the pros and cons of an online magazine versus a printed version?)

·      Students could have a choice of how they submit -electronically or a hard copy.

·      Blogs are a possible tool to be used in the creation of a literary magazine.

·      Blogs could be used as a collaborative tool for peer editing and comments.

·      Access, privacy issues, misuse - all issues

·      Students like to publish online; technology is such a part of their lives, may be better to have an online literary magazine

Student Role in the Creation of a Literary Magazine (How can students contribute to the process of establishing and creating a literary magazine?)

Students

·      may contribute art, poetry, and short stories to the literary magazine

·      may peer edit work in classes before submission

·      can come up with a theme for each issue

·      should be mostly responsible for the content and layout of the magazine

Adviser Role (What are the responsibilities of the literary magazine’s adviser?)

Advisers

·      collaborate with other teachers to obtain submissions (contests, classroom assignments, etc.)

·      have the final say before publication

·      direct but allows the students to actually create the magazine.

·      minimally edit the work of students to retain authenticity

Conclusion of Literature Findings

·      More information needed on technology, specifically 2.0 tools that can be used in creating literary magazines (possible obstacle - student access to the Internet)

·      Further information needed on the creation of literary magazines (practical)

·      Examples needed of good student produced literary magazines

·      Assess current resources at my school
