Running

In late 2009, I decided to participate in the Dublin City Marathon 2010, partly inspired by Ciaran Sutton and partly inspired by my declining level of fitness.

Runjects

Runjects is the name given to a few of us that go running together. It's me, Brendan, Gabhan, Angela, John and Seamus. We started out running laps of the North campus of NUI Maynooth a few nights a week. From our humble, wheezing, unfit beginnings, we begun progressing steadily. Pain is only weakness leaving the body.

First 5 km road race.

It took me 21 minutes 15 seconds to run the length of Carton Avenue 5 times, which is 0.9262 km long and almost completely flat. The total distance covered was 4.82 km, which meant a pace of 7:06 per mile (4:24 per km).
11/04/105??
Maynooth
I ran a 5 km route from the town, through Carton Demense and back to the train station along the canal. I tried to keep a fast pace but unfortunately I had to walk for a bit at the 3 km mark and the 4km mark. Maybe because of the very warm weather or maybe because of the damned hills on the golf course road. Either way, I still have work to do if I'm gonna finish this marathon.

I ran from the town, through Carton Avenue, through the golf course main entrance and back again, stopping at the entrance to my estate. The total distance was 5.4 km according to gmap-pedometer.com. Total time was 24:08, which is a pace of 7:10 per mile (4:27 per km). If I had stopped at the 5 km mark at this pace, it would have taken 22:20. I think I'm going to aim for 22 minutes in the Leixlip race on May 8th. It may be a bit difficult though, given the slopes involved on the route.

I went for a run around the campus with Seamus. The first 3 km of our run was at a slow pace but then I picked it up for the last 2 km. Split times per kilometre were: 5:32, 5:22, 5:28, 4:12 and 4:04, giving a total time of 24:38. It was a little tough, since I hadn't run for 11 days (working on a paper). After a rest though, I jogged from the side entrance to the campus back home. That was a distance of 1.28 km and it took me 5:38, for a pace of 7:05 per mile (4:24 per km).

Star Wars Day! I ran from behind my estate to the front of the golf course and back in around 23 minutes (I used Alkaline Trio's album This Addiction for timing). It was the first thing I did today and haven't eaten since dinner yesterday. Maybe that's affected my energy. I was out between 12 and 1 and today was cooler than other days I've run the route, and it's much easier without the heat. The Leixlip race is on this Saturday, so hopefully my time will be better than 23 minutes. Still aiming for 22.

Brendan, Seamus and I went for a jog around the north campus. I took it easy for the first 3 km so not to injure anything right before the Leixlip race. My 1 km split times were: 5:48, 5:43, 5:34, 4:26 and 4:14, for a total time of 25:45. Brendan finished in 28:17 and Seamus in 29:01.

5 km road race in Leixlip.
I was hoping to finish in 22 minutes but, in hindsight, I think I was looking for too much. I could blame the slopes along the course, specifically the railway bridge and the long uphill main road, but I don't really know if they cost me 26 seconds. My target is still 22 minutes for 5 km or a pace of 4:24 min/km. That's just 5 seconds per km off my current pace, so hopefully I'll hit it in the next few weeks.

Started jogging without a route in mind, just planned on doing the longest run I'd done. Sore muscle on the outside of my upper right leg at my hip. Hope it's nothing to do with my stance. I would have liked to keep running, but it got too sore. This is the kind of pace I want to keep for my longer runs, but I don't plan on such a fast pace for the marathon.

First time running 10 km. Right leg has a slight twinge in the same place as last time, but it's not as bad. I don't feel as worn out either, even though I played football earlier. Feels good, looking forward to doing this more often during the summer.

07/06/106.138:006:13
The Curragh
Went for a run around some of the Curragh with Fran and Fitzy. Slow enough pace, since the other guys were only getting into running. Fran made it the whole way, but Fitzy turned back after 15 minutes. I coasted through it, no problem. I had a bottle of Lucozade sport beforehand though, maybe that had something to do with it.
09/06/10101:07:006:42
Maynooth
Went for 10 km with Seamus and Brendan. It was their first time jogging 10 k and Seamus has had problems with his ankles before, so we took it really slow. The muscle at the top of my thigh had only a slight twinge, so I guess it's getting stronger. When we got back to my house, we stretched and then I drank some muscle recovery mix made by Lucozade, with 25 g of carbs and 10 g of protein.
10/06/101050:105:01

I took yesterdays run very easy, so I felt I had to try a bit harder by myself. My legs felt a little fatigued, but they weren't as bad as if I had played football at lunch. I think the recovery mix I dank yesterday had the desired effect. I tried to run it quicker than before but I think I pushed too hard early on and tired myself out by the end of the golf course. I really considered turning back then! A lesson learned: don't push it early on. 5 km road race in Lucan on Sunday, should be good.
13/06/10521:304:18
Lucan
My third race. Me, Seamus, Brendan and Paul ran in the Lucan Harriers AC Tom Byrne Memorial 5 km Race. Before the race, Paul had two cigarettes and was getting some looks from the other racers warming up. The course was quite flat but there were some tight twists and turns in places. The weather started out great - overcast with a slight breeze - but halfway through the race, the sun came out and heated everything up. I tried to push myself for pace and did quite well. I only started running out of breath at about the 3 km mark. I was knackered with half a kilometre to go but managed to somehow sprint the last 100 metres - passing 4 or 5 other races in doing so. :) Felt good afterwards. Had some recovery mix and a Mars bar - sorted. Also got a t-shirt.

Another 10 km run around the same route. It's getting easier and easier the more I run it. Tried to pace myself early on and not let myself get out of breath too soon. Started breathing heavy after the 3 km mark, so I don't think I did too bad. The worst part was getting stomach cramp around the 4 km mark and having to put up with it until the end. About 20 minutes before going out, I had a small bowl of fruit and nuts and a few glasses of water - don't think that would have caused stomach cramps. Timed myself at 25 minutes for the first 5 km. Decided I was feeling pretty good at that stage, so tried pushing a little harder. It worked because I got through the next 5 km in 23 minutes. As soon as I got home I had my recovery mix and stretched the muscles properly. The muscle on my right hip isn't hurting at all any more - but it does feel a little more tired than the one on the left.

Note to self: Never go for a run after having dinner. I watched the France v Mexico game tonight and had dinner at the start (roast chicken, roast veg and boiled potatoes). After Mexico won 2-0 I decided to go for a short 5 km since it was getting late and my legs were a bit tired. Started the run at 9:38, thought I was going to take it easy... but completely didn't. I pushed myself and it came back to bite me. After about 3 km my stomach started feeling really bad - just nauseated. Finished in a good time but didn't feel good afterwards. Had recovery mix and stretched. I'm glad I'm able to keep it under 22 minutes though. Next target: sub-21 minutes. I think if I paced myself a bit better I might be able to do it. Need to get myself a stopwatch.

Decided to push for a decent distance, to see where my limit might lie. As it turns out, I think it's near 15 km. Took it easy enough. Wasn't pushing and didn't let myself get out of breath. I finished the run not even out of breath, which I'm really happy about. My legs, however, were shattered. They were tired and in a little pain. I don't think I could have done another 5 kilometres - my legs just wouldn't be able for it. Biggest problem I had was runner's nipple. The t-shirt I wore was chafing really bad on my nipple to the point where it was really sore. At the 9 km mark I took my top off and ran the rest of the way topless - chafing-free. I think I need to get myself a proper running top. Legs feel fine now, 4 hours later. A little rest and I should be able to go for it again in two or three days.
23/06/10---MaynoothSpeed training with Brendan and his brother Eoghan on the South Campus of the college. Started off with a warm-up and stretching. Then it was 30 seconds of 75% of our max, 1:30 of slow jogging, then 1 minute at 75% max, then rest, then 2 minutes, rest, 1 minute, rest, 2 minutes, rest, 1 minute, rest and the 30 seconds to finish off. It was pretty tough, but I might try and do more of that since I think it was a good workout for cardio.

Went out with the intention of running another 15 km, but by about the 7 km mark, I knew that my legs weren't going to be up to it. They were very tired and starting to hurt a little, so I decided to cut the run short and leave it at 10 km. I went out at around 1 pm and the sun was out - it was a warm day. This made breathing noticeably more difficult. Things just didn't seem right at all during the run. I think this is a lesson to take longer breaks before and after long runs.
29/06/1015.31:14:374:53
Maynooth
Another 15 km run. Tried to take it easy after what happened the last time, but took it a little too easy. My pace was well above 5 min/km for the first 5 km, so I ended up spending the next 4 km trying to catch up on 5 min/km overall, which was a bit tough. By the 9 km mark I was there. Wasn't feeling too bad so decided to go for the full run. My right gluteus maximus (right arse) was sore, but not enough to cut the run short. Finished faster than 5 min/km, so I'm happy with that. Probably wont have another run until next week (it's Tuesday now) because of a night out on Thursday and a wedding on the weekend. Might play football on Thursday instead.

Decided to go for a run, since I hadn't been out in a while and the Phoenix Park race was coming up in 6 days. Took it easy enough, but it was a warm day and there was the long incline from Lumville House up to the motorway bridge... so it was a bit tiring!

My 4th race. Me, Ciaran Sutton, Sarah Gallagher, Ciaran's uncle Simon and cousin Ben took part in the Adidas - Irish Runner 5 Mile Race in the Phoenix Park, Dublin. The race started at 10 am, so I had an early start. Only got a couple of hours sleep the night before but that didn't seem to have an effect. The weather was a bit cold and breezy at first, but once I got into the race it wasn't noticeable. Plenty of inclines and twists along the route, but it was a really enjoyable run. The only problem was trying to get around the crowd of people in the way. I started in the middle of the sub-40 minutes field, but I spent all of the race passing people. Maybe I should have started further up. Tried to keep to a 7 minute a mile pace, so I'm really glad that I beat it. Actually, I was very close to my best 5 km pace - so I'm well chuffed with that. Also... got a tshirt.

Marathon Training: Week 3

Maynooth
I'm starting to stick to the marathon training plan that was in the booklet given out at the 5 mile race. Basically, the idea is to go out for easy jogs 4 weekdays of a week, plus two long runs on the weekend. Tried to take it easy today so that I'll be able to go out again tomorrow. From now on, I'm not recording times and paces for training. The aim of a marathon is to finish it. The way to train is to go jogging often but easy. No pushing for time or anything like that - just get out there 6 days a week.

I've decided to be realistic about my marathon finish time, so I'm now aiming for between 4:00 - 4:45 instead of sub-4 hours. This means my training requirements are reduced a little. Was feeling really tired during this run, so took a short route. I think I may have been jogging too fast.

Out even earlier today - was out the door by half 10 in the morning. It's nice because it's still cool outside. The day hasn't heated up yet, so breathing is easier. I think training as a whole is getting less difficult. I'm jogging around at a 5 min/km or 8 min/mile pace and when I get back to the house, I'm not wrecked tired. I guess this means I'm doing the training right! The 10 mile race is 9 days away, so I think I'm going to try push for time all of next week in preparation - aim for 7 min/mile.

Me, Brendan and Tony took part in the 5 km road race hosted by Rathfarnham Athletics Club. We heard this was a quick course and that it's popular for setting a 5k personal best, but we didn't expect this to happen! Both me and Bren smashed our previous 5k PBs, set in Lucan. Since I haven't done a short race like this in a while and I've been spending my time training for the marathon, I really noticed the difference between these short races and the long distances. There's no finding a pace you like and sticking to it. You need to really attack these from the start and just try hard to keep up your fast pace, even though it hurts. I'm delighted to see how far we've progressed over the past 6 months for running.

Because I didn't go out for a long run over the weekend, I decided to go for one tonight. Was meant to go for 18 miles though, but didn't make it. It was getting dark, my legs were getting tired and I was getting hungry. Tried to find my marathon pace, but it looks like my pace here for this, 9:28 min/mile, is too slow to beat 4 hours in the marathon. If I want to beat 4 hours, it will take a lot of work between now and the big day.

This was meant to be my 20 mile weekend, but I wasn't prepared for that distance, so I'm leaving it to next weekend. Nice warm day, wore my compression top, which was comfortable. Nice run, although my right knee was at me the whole way. Stopped around the 5 mile mark to stretch my hamstrings, which seemed to help a bit.
Maynooth to Newbridge20 mile weekend. I jogged from Maynooth to Newbridge, my longest training run. By the time I had reached the roundabout at Barberstown, my knee was in quite a bit of pain. I considered stopping and turning back to be sure of not damaging myself, but thought that if I didn't do that run there and then, I wouldn't be completely prepared for the marathon. It was a dangerous run along the Clane road. There's no path and at some stretches of road there isn't even a verge. There was quite a bit of traffic. Scary stuff. I stopped in Clane for a few minutes to buy a drink of water then continued. The pain in my knee had subsided and I didn't notice it as long as I was running. On the way into Roseberry though, Ihad to stop to tie my laces and the pain came rushing back. Starting again was very, very sore. When I reached Newbridge I had to take a long route through the town, up the main street. This meant agonising pauses at traffic lights. I had been eating the energy gels the whole way, but couldn't tell how much f a difference they were making, just had to trust that without them, I'd have been doing worse. When I eventually made it home, I was in pieces. I took a cold water bath (no ice in the freezer) which I think made a difference to my recovery. This jog gave me a taste of what hitting the wall in the marathon would be really like. Valuable experience.

My Race Number (The Runjects Creed)

This is my race number.
There are many like it, but this one is mine.
My race number is my best friend.
It is my life.
I must master it as I must master my life.
My race number without me is useless.
Without my race number, I am useless.
I must wear my race number true.
I must run straighter than my enemy who is trying to beat me.
I must cross the finish line before he does. I will...
My race number and myself know that what counts in a race is not the steps we take, the noise of our Asics Gels, nor the stride we make.
We know it is the finish time that counts. We will win...
My race number is human, even as I, because it is my life.
Thus, I will learn it as a brother.
I will learn its weaknesses, its strengths, its parts, its accessories, its official sponsor, and its safety pins.
I will ever guard it against the ravages of weather and damage.
I will keep my race number clean and ready, even as I am clean and ready.
We will become part of each other. We will...
Before Steve Prefontaine I swear this creed.
My race number and myself are the defenders of my country.
We are the masters of our race route.
We are the saviors of my life.
So be it, until there is no enemy, but post-race lunch in Twist.

The 'position' was determined by the time on the clock when the runner passed the finish time - NOT their chip time. Simon and Ben started the race further up in the group than me, Ciaran and Sarah. Ben wasn't actually registered - he just arrived and ran for the laugh. He finished well ahead of Simon though. Also, Ben is 11 years old and ran in normal clothing.
