Nhung Huynh

Nhung Huynh is Elizabeth Huynh's mother. She “either owns, has a stake in, or controls, most of the businesses in the area of New Orleans that the Vietnamese live in.”

ChildrenElizabeth ("Litta'Bit," 17); Jason (14)

Ms. Huynh and her family live in "the largest and nicest" house in Westwood Village, a newer upscale gated community far south of downtown New Orleans. In a footnote, it's noted that the company that built Westwood Village was "formerly known as Huynh Financial Services."

A Mr. Huynh has never been mentioned, neither in the past nor in the present, and it is assumed that Ms. Huynh lives with and raises her children alone. Similarly, there's been no mention of Litta'Bit's father (or Jason's father) in the text.

NAME
Her last name is pronounced a bit like the English word “win.” Her first name is hard for English speakers to master, and sounds somewhat approximately like “(n)Yoong,” with the initial ‘n’ sound shortened and combined with the stronger ‘y’ sound. In practice, Ms. Huynh answers to a variety of American pronunciations, from “nuh-hung,” “young,” and “nun.” Most Americans refer to her by her last name and call her Win, though Lucas Budd has always gone out of his way to use her real first name.

“Nhung Huynh” is the Americanized version of her name, of course; in Vietnam she was known as Hunỳh Thị Những.
