Imagine
Imagine a school whose primary purpose was to fill its pupils with self love and self respect.
Imagine a school whose aim is to bring out the unique wisdom, talents and skills of each and every student rather than try to impose a set of beliefs and skills onto each pupil.
Imagine a school where a large percentage of the day would be spent outside in nature or expressing physically.
Imagine a school where sexuality was approached as one of the most beautiful, creative, joyous divine experiences available to man as opposed to something which is to be avoided or about which we are ashamed.
Imagine a school which supported its teachers to find creative ways to set boundaries and manage them which avoided aggression at all costs.
Imagine a school where the teachers understood that the most powerful lessons they can teach are through how they teach and not what they teach.
Imagine a school where the curriculum is designed to be relevant to the students at their stage in life rather than one which prepares them for the future. A school which challenged the insane myth that everything we do is ‘in order to get somewhere’ whilst missing the point that life is lived in the moment of now. What better preparation is there for adult life. (How many of us are living our lifes for the sake of a future which never arrives?)
Imagine a school where students get to choose what they want to learn.
Imagine a school where students help each other.
Imagine a school which wasn’t split by ages.
Imagine a school where parents realised that parenting skills are just like driving skills only much harder. Most of us need help with honing and developing them.
Imagine a school where the teachers and students think of each other as people and not roles
Imagine a school where the teachers are encouraged to also 'be at school', learn and be joyous - this teaching is through modelling
Imagine a school where the teachers are encouraged at every step and are never criticised or spoken with harshly by parents or other teachers
Imagine a school where the management structure is made up of equal but different roles, where the buck stops everywhere
Imagine a school where the teachers are encouraged and paid to continue their education through self investigation, therapeutic skills and personal expression. their odyssey is the fuel of the students
Imagine a school where the teachers would be able to declare that this is the greatest job in the world and the very best place to work because they are invested in with deep respect by everyone and in turn they embody and teach this respect
Imagine a school where the teachers are given the space and facility to work through their negativity in a healthy and productive way other than taking it out on other staff or the students
Imagine a school where every member of the school has equal stake in its success.
Imagine a school where the teachers are encouraged to join other classes they don't teach and sit with the students and learn new subjects
Imagine a school where the students will teach: perhaps everyone will develop areas of expertise
Imagine a school where the lessons will be as long as people want them to be including the teachers.
Imagine a school where the teachers will be paid a salary that recognises the central and unselfish role they play in society
Imagine a school where the teachers will be celebrated and encouraged by parents who will actively learn from and share with the teacher
Imagine a school where the teacher will some to school and be saturated by a feeling of 'everything is ok' so that their students and colleagues experience this of them
Imagine a school where no student will ever experiece fear from another
Imagine a school where the student will develop the personal power to face their fears
Imagine a school where the student will see how knowledge and self are so beautifully webbed together
Imagine a school where he student will be encouraged to teach and share and give and be respected for their understanding and knowledge
Imagine then such a school. What would the subjects then be ? How about these…
- Appreciation skills
- Listening skills – how to talk so you are listened to and how to listen so that people talk
- Conflict management
- Nature connection
- Sibling rivalry management
- Creative dance and physical expression
- Meditation and how to create calmness
- Lateral Thinking
- Power – its use and abuse
- Relationship issues
- Parent / child relationship
Of course there will be reading, writing and mathematics but the purpose of such a school will not be to indoctrinate a set of values and beliefs but instead to be as the soil to a flower.
