CLASSES

Tahitian dancing is a spiritual dance form that accompanies energetic island drums and other indigenous instruments, such as flute and dijeridoo.  The dance requires body movement and memory control, intricate hip movements, graceful hand movements and leg technique. Tahitian dance is a full cardio and resistance workout that hones coordination, strength, body memory, hip isolation, fluidity, balance, muscle tone, and grace.

Classes are ongoing and currently held at Graves Pierce Gym in Alpine every Monday and Wednesday from 5:00pm - 6:00pm through mid-August, 2009.  Starting fall, 2009, classes will be held 6:00 – 7:00 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  Classes are free with a gym pass or SRSU student ID.

Choreographer, dancer, and artistic director Kareva Mateata-Allain has conducted Tahitian dance workshops in Los Angeles, Dallas, New Mexico, Alpine, and Chicago. As a Tahitian writer, translator, and scholar, she holds a Ph.D. in English with an emphasis in Oceanic and indigenous literatures. She is an avid Tahitian historian and cultural purveyor and is available to conduct dance workshops, provide individual or class instruction, and present professional lectures about Tahitian culture and history.

Workshops will be geared to meet specific needs and timeframes (such as 2-4 hour blocks or one or more days), whether beginner, novice, or intermediate. Workshops will include music, handouts, and learning one of Kareva's original choreographies.

For several years, she directed her troupe in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  Kareva is now based in beautiful Alpine, Texas.  Current troupe members are Alessandra Fera Santucci, Carolina Stockwell, Ra Romero, Lia Carrasco-Waelbrock, Jane Pascual, and Kareva.
