 The goal is to reach Dakar with a rust bucket that is not more than 500 euros worth. On top of this 500 euros, another 250 euros can be spend on repairs. After much research and phone calls Hugo came to the only Trabant Kombi available in West Germany at the time, for sale in Cuxhaven for 375 euros. The Kombi has been standing for 10 years but still was "gute SUBSTANZ" (quality substance) according to Herr Bier, the seller. Hugo liked the German Trabant and after much bargaining he could get it for 300 euros. A week later he picked it up and baptized it Manni the Trabbi Kombi. Almost immediately Manni was stripped to the bone and the engine has been revised and prepared for crossing the dessert. Next step was to make Manni presentable. Hugo had a color combination of black and white in mind: Manni white and his wheels black. The last step was to put stickers of our sponsors all over it - and thus Manni became a genuine rally rust bucket! |
