Brief Commentary on Introduction to Web Site Visual Analysis Lesson

Overall, I thought this lesson flowed smoothly.  I set up the importance of what we were doing in class by briefly mentioning that Assignment 5 focuses on visual communication and that one of the options students can select for Assignment 5 is to create a web site. 

It was good to get a sense of what the students knew about web site evaluation before having them look critically at the MLK sites.  This helped them brainstorm ideas on things they should be looking for.  It was also good to show the video after the students had analyzed the site because it allowed the students to come up with their own analyses first and then see some new techniques they would be able to incorporate in future analyses.  Also, watching the video was more meaningful to the students since they had just visited a few of the site depicted in it.

Having students analyze web site that were of interest of them that I had selected beforehand seemed to work well.  Since the students were interested in the sites, they were more motivated to explore them and stay on task for longer.  I am glad I had them submit responses via Moodle to keep the students even more on task.

One thing I would do differently in the future is have the students do the reading I assigned for HW that night before this class.  The aspects of design that will be explained to them in the reading would have been helpful in this class’s analysis.
