Lesson Title: Introduction to Assignment 4

Objectives:

  • Brainstorm topics for Assignment 4

Materials Needed:

For Teacher:

  • Assignment 4 HO
  • Teacher Evaluation HO

For Students:

  • Paper
  • Pencil

Before Class:

  • Set out cards with students names on them
  • Have students pick theirs up as they enter the room
  • At the start of class collect the leftovers and put with attendance sheet
  • Ask students about their weekend

Introduction:  

  1. Self Evaluation (display following questions on projector via Moodle site) (10 minutes) 
  • What are you trying to say in this paper? What is your main idea?
  • Who might be interested in reading this paper?
  • What do you like best in the paper?
  •  What do you like least in your paper?
  • What would you work on if you had 24 hours more to spend on the project?
  • If you had to do this assignment again and pick a different topic, how would you do things differently?  Why?

Procedure: 

  1. Teacher Evaluation (project questions on screen) (15 minutes)
  2. Pair up:  Define analysis and share definition of analysis with the class (list definitions on board) (5 minutes)
    • Focus on a complex subject
    • Thorough explanation of the subject’s parts and how they relate to one another
    • Research
    • Straightforward organization
    • Insights
    • Conclusion that ties parts together
  3. Activity:  Where is your favorite place you have been?  Be specific. (Ex. Not New York but the Statue of Liberty)  (15 minutes)
    • Prewriting:  Answer the following questions about that place:
      • What is the place?  Where is it?  When did you discover it?
      • Describe it.
      • Were you attracted to this place immediately or did it grow on you?  Why?
      • Was there something you didn’t notice about this place initially that you now appreciate?
      • Think about where this place is located?  Does its location make sense or would it be more convenient if it was located elsewhere?
      • Why are you drawn to this place?
    • Share with a partner your favorite place
    • Ask a few students to share with the class
  4. Presentation:  Introduce Assignment 4  (20 minutes)
    • Purpose:  Get to know campus and learn to appreciate its architectural, natural and artistic design.
    • Ask class:  What buildings/artwork/plants stand out to you on campus?
      • Create list on board
      • Bring up pictures on projection screen
    • Goal:  Analyze ISU landscape or an object within it and react to it emotionally
    • Things to address in your paper:
      • Something about it that grew on you
      • What on the piece attracted your attention immediately
      • What on the piece did you not notice at first but later on began to appreciate after you learned background information
      • Comments about its placement on campus
      • Something you find puzzling or interesting about it

Closure: 

  1. Watch “Gentle Doctor” (at Vet Med campus) Video from http://www.museums.iastate.edu/DAOC/home.html (10 minutes)
    • How does the video designer analyze the artwork?
    • How does the designer use visuals in his presentation?
    • Does he leave anything out of his analysis?
    • What is your overall opinion of the analysis?
    • What ideas can you take from videos like these and put into your analysis?
