Roundtable News (11/1/09)

Huzzah!                                                                                                                             (updated 11//09)

Welcome to November! Our next meeting will be the last one of 2009.

For anyone unfortunate to miss the October meeting, it was amazing! Scott Mingus told the story of Gettysburg few event think of - John B. Gordon's trip in Pennsylvania prior to the Battle of Gettysburg. After seeing where, when and why the Confederates were well into not only Adams County, but York County and on the verge of crossing the Susquehanna, many like myself saw the pieces of the puzzle that leads to Gettysburg famous three days fall into place, including why Harry Heth thought the men he faced in Gettysburg were local militia and why they shouljdn't hinder his advance.

This time around, we welcome yet another professor to our group. Professor Michael Pierson from U Mass Lowell will talk about his book, "Mutiny at Fort Jackon; the Untold Story of the Fall of New Orleans."

In April 1862, most of the 600 man Confederate garrison of Fort Jackson mutinied against their officers. This was a real mutiny--not just another case of untrained citizen soldiers refusing to obey some officer they had lost trust in. Shots were fired; cannons were spiked. Ultimately, Fort Jackson changed hands, and the Union path to New Orleans became much easier. Our guest’s talk will examine the motives of the mutineers--and also of the men in the garrison who stayed loyal to the Confederacy.

Professor Pierson has been a life long Civil War student after attending his first Roundtable meeting in Hamden, CT while in high school, but recalls his first trip to Gettysburg at age 11 and the impression that left with him,

He's written two book on the Civil War. The one he'll discuss at the meeting will be available for purchase and signing at the meeting.

So, please join us on Friday, November 13th for our next meeting.
