The return of Dr. Whitehorn made for a great meeting in May. Organizing and making of the amry was not as easy as it might appear. Thank you Dr. Whitehorn. For the past few months we've been meeting at our new location. In case you haven't been there yet, we now meet at the East Parish United Methodist Church in Salisbury. It's at 8 Lafayette Rd (Rte 1). This is right behind the CVS at the corner of Beach Rd. and Rte 1.
We ask that you park along the side by the CVS (handicapped available) or behind the church. Please enter through the side door that faces CVS near the back.
PLEASE BE CAREFUL AS THE STEPS TO THE BASEMENT FROM THIS DOOR ARE CEMENT AND COULD BE TRICKY. ANYONE NEEDING AN ELEVATOR LIFT TO THE BASEMENT, PLEASE SEE ART OBER AT THE CHURCH.
If there are any questions regarding this new venue or how to get there, please email us:
Tickets for the July 12th picnic will be on sale at the June meeting. Tickets are $2 per person. You must have a ticket to be allowed under the pavillion. It'll again be at the Salisbury Beach State Reservation. There is an entrance fee courtesy of Massachusetts. Questions regarding this event can be answered at the meeting in June.
On mext meeting however, will take place on Wednesday, June 13, 2012. Our special guest speaker will be Mike DuMont. His topic is the Battle of New Bern. In a recent email, he says this: "Michael Patrick DuMont, retired from the USAF with 32 year’s service. Also retired from Princeton University, Office of Radiation Safety and Occupational Health. My military career began as an Air Force Para-rescue jumper, medic, and transitioned into Bioenvironmental Engineering and Nuclear incident response. I have been researching and writing a book on Civil War Desertions for over 10 years and often present on that subject to various Civil War Round Tables and Educational institutions. My maternal GG Grand Father was a member of the 3rd NY Cavalry along with his brother who were both captured during the battle of Ream’s Station in June 1864. Both were initially listed on the muster reports as “Deserted.” Only latter when the fact of their capture was known, the muster roll was never corrected. That is what got me so interested in the entire subject of desertion." He continued," My wife and I moved to New Bern, NC in November 2005 and I immediately became involved with the New Bern Historical Society who owns about one-third of the land where the Battle of New Bern was fought on March 14, 1862. I became the Chairperson of the battlefield guides and have been involved in the protection of a precious part of that battlefield. Ironically, the 3rd NTY Cavalry was stationed in New Bern in 1863-64 prior to moving north to join in Grant’s Overland Campaign. They also were involved in Potter’s Raid in North Eastern NC working out of New Bern. Both of these facts I only learned after moving here, so there is some Twilight Zone type karma involved in our move, I dare say. My GG Grand Father’s brother was sent to Salisbury North Carolina Military Prison where he died. MY GG Grand Father was sent to Andersonville where he survived although suffered for the remainder of his life from the privations and diseases he experienced during his captivity."
