David Hatz

Mr. Hatz is in his 11th year of teaching at Chula Vista High School following a 27-year career in newspapers. He currently teaches AP English Language and Composition and serves as advisor for The Spectrum, the school’s student-produced newspaper. He is also an AP Resource Teacher and the English Department’s FAC representative. He earned a BA degree in journalism at San Diego State University in 1972, and completed his educational certification at National University in 1998. He has completed additional educational training at SDSU, UCLA and the University of San Diego. Mr. Hatz’s first association with CVH was in 1978 when he served as a volunteer coach for the varsity football team. He also coached from 1983-99, working with both the varsity and junior varsity football teams, and the junior varsity baseball team.

He is a native San Diegan, and was born in National City (Paradise Valley Hospital) in 1948. He graduated from Hilltop High School, but insists that he had an alma mater transplant the first time he worked at the "Home of Champions" in 1978. He is married (Lora, senior news editor at The San Diego Union-Tribune). The couple have a 12-year-old daughter (Emily). She attends Bonita Vista Middle, but aspires to become a Spartan and perform with the Main Attraction.

Mr. Hatz possesses a diverse, eclectic musical taste that spans jazz, rock, alternative and even a little country, but his favorite musician by far is Jimmy Buffett, whom he has seen in concert 27 times (approximately). He also enjoys traveling, reading, and walking, and is his spare time is an ongoing surfer in training.
