Six-Room House
Six-Room House
This building measured about 70 feet by 18 feet. Each of the six rooms was ten feet wide with a hearth in the center of the wall serving two rooms. Archaeology revealed that the fireplaces perhaps were faced with decorative delft tiles. This structure was one of two significant buildings facing a courtyard on this lot enclosed by a handsome brick wall laid over ballast stones. The central yard and formal entrance suggest a public use for the space. While the exact function of the complex remains a mystery, researchers have proposed several theories. Artifacts including hundreds of glass beads; over 5,000 brass straight pins; large quantities of buttons made of bone, embossed copper, brass, and silver; over a dozen thimbles; sleeve (cuff) links; scissors; and buckles suggest that five of the six rooms were used by tailors. The sixth room might have been an office. Another theory, not supported by artifacts found in the structure, is that the building was a public house, or tavern, where travelers could purchase food and lodging. Innkeeper and colonial official, Cornelius Harnett, Sr., owned the property very briefly in 1732.

I didn't even tidy it up before I took the picture. I love having a big bright window to look out of while sewing. This is the second bedroom on the second floor. I LOVE it!!
