My Organ Donation

My Organ Donation was developed as part of a Student Selected Component (SSC) project in 2010 by a team of 4th year medical undergraduates. The website aims to raise awareness about various aspects of Organ Donation (OD) through interactive e-learning activities (e-lectures, videos, quiz).

To use this resource, you will require your Leeds University e-mail account (@leeds.ac.uk) to register. This website will prepare yourself prior to attending/observing transplants being carried out.

Women in Surgery (WinS)

We at Cutting Edge Leeds would like to promote this initiative within the Medical School and this page is dedicated to this.

Women in Surgery Conference 2009, Royal College of Surgeons

Date and Time: 19th October 2009, 09:00-18:00

The conference talks ranged from insightful experiences from current female surgeons to advice and guidance upon how to be a better surgeon. Miss Helen Fernandes, an excellent neurosurgeon, provided detailed information upon the application process towards entering a surgical career path. There was a workshop dedicated to medical students to answer questions about life as a surgeon, how to manage family and work and what steps need to be taken whilst at medical school to better your chances in the surgical world.

Lunch was catered at the Royal college of Surgeons, where students and professionals could mingle and get to know one another. It was fascinating to speak to female registras currently in their surgical training. The information they shared and advice they gave to us medical students was invaluable. This was a great opportunity to gain contacts!

The final workshop was the basic surgical skills course. Each student was given equipment to stitch deep cuts and this was demonstrated by current surgical trainees. The workshop also involved ‘give it a go’ session on the laparotomy simulation. The simulation really gave us an idea of how difficult it is to remove a gall bladder!

The overall experience was incredible, certificates and information on how to join WinS society was given to each conference attendee before the day ended. After the conference socials were also arranged where students and professionals could get to know one another and share experiences. This conference is held annually and great feedback was received from students that attended from Leeds University, it is a highly recommended conference for those of you interested in Surgery.
