CU Triathlon Upholds Prestige with 3rd Place at Collegiate Nationals

posted ‎‎Apr 20, 2009 9:55 AM‎‎ by Daniel Bjugstad

The main event is over as the 2009 USAT Collegiate Nationals are complete and CU upholds its prestige amongst collegiate triathlon.

The CU Tri Squad secured its place on the podium with a third place victory overall.

The fleet-footed male athletes raced into fourth place as each of your team mates finished within the top 100 places. Cedric Wane's hard work and absolute dedication paid off as he finished 3rd place overall, just 29 seconds behind the first-place finisher. Our top-scoring team mates all finished within the top 35 slots, and ladies' favorite Todd Darlington claimed the fourth place win for the male graduate division.

  1      3  Cedric Wane        2:01:42
  2     26  Todd Darlington    2:12:01
  3     29  Steve Richard      2:12:25

  6   ( 78) Andrew Nelson     2:19:17
  7   ( 98) Andrew Auer        2:22:20

The go-for-broke female nationals team claimed a second place victory, again, each racer finishing top 100. Top racers all finished within the fastest 40 female racers. Ashley Walker secured fourth place finish in the female graduate division and the indomitable Jessica Broderick claimed first place in the overall female division.

  1      1  Jessica Broderick      2:18:34
  2     11  Ashley Walker          2:27:35
  3     19  Heidi Spees             2:30:44
  4     38  Danielle Russell       2:39:00
  5   ( 62) Blair Snyder             2:45:26
  6   ( 67) Jesse Prather          2:46:19
  7   ( 95) Morgan Burrows       2:53:05

In the Collegiate Sprint race, the CU tri squad demonstrated just how deep our talent runs with a fourth-place victory going to Charity Watson in the female division and eighth place to John Euwema in the male division. Dr. Joe Britton crossed the finishline fourth overall, claiming first place in his age group.

Of course, this all would have been impossible without the crucial coaching of Mike Ricci. He has helped shape the team into a fierce unit capable of upholding CU's decorated history.

The team now sets its sights on Collegiate Nationals 2010!

CU Dominates Mountain Region Regional

posted ‎‎Mar 22, 2009 5:05 PM‎‎ by Joe Britton

CU DOMINATED at Regional’s! On the Men’s side we scored, 1, 3, 7, 9 , and 11 (5 out of top 11). Cédric Wane, Todd Darlington, Bryant, Mason, Will Nabors, and Andy Nelson were the top scorers. Cédric was the only athlete to go under 1:59. Todd arrived late on Friday night and didn’t sleep at all – he didn’t feel good and raced to a 2:05:xx. We raced without our #3 Male, Steve Richard as well.

On the Women’s side, we scored 1, 2 and 11 (3 of the top 11 places). Ashley Walker took the overall, Heidi Spees followed and Blair Snyder took 11th. We raced without our #1 female, Jessica Broderick.

We won Men’s and Women’s Title as well as the Overall Title and $500 to boot. It was a great day in hot conditions. In addition we had about 12 people complete their first triathlon!

After the age groupers warm up the course in the morning, the professionals will take their turn at the 1.5k swim, 40k bike, 10k run for the 26th annual USA Triathlon Elite National Championship at Henry Hagg Lake, outside Portland, Ore., on Saturday afternoon.

The women's race is scheduled for noon, while the men compete at 2:15 p.m.

Follow the race live here with online text updates beginning at noon.

It's the first time the age groupers and elites have raced for national titles at the same venue since 1992 in Cleveland, Ohio.

For the elites, the event will also serve as an ITU Pan American Cup and will be the fourth race in the 2008 Haul to the Great Wall Elite Series. A $30,000 prize purse is on the line, plus bonuses from Speedo for the top U.S. athletes.

Highlighting the field are all six athletes who represented the U.S. at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games last month. For the women, 19 women are on the start list, which includes Olympians and past national champions Laura Bennett, Julie Ertel and Sarah Haskins. But these Olympians will be challenged by Sarah Groff, 2005 champion Becky Lavelle, two-time U23 Worlds silver medalist Jasmine Oeinck and a host of other athletes vying for their first title.

The 37 men will include 2008 Olympians Hunter Kemper, Matt Reed, and Jarrod Shoemaker, plus 2004 Olympian and defending national champion Andy Potts. Kemper will be going for his seventh national title, a feat that would put him one ahead of U.S. legend Scott Molina. Don't count out current elite series points leader Brian Fleischmann, Portland-native and past world No. 1 Mark Fretta, Tim O'Donnell, or 2002 champion Seth Wealing.

A unique angle to the men's race is the appearance of Ben Collins, who just a year ago won the overall age group national title at this same venue and is learning the ropes of professional, draft-legal competition.

About the Haul to the Great Wall Elite Series

The five-race draft-legal Olympic distance series is giving triathlon fans a chance to see athletes who have qualified for the U.S. Olympic Team and those up-and-coming athletes who have their sights set on London in 2012. Each race also includes a stellar international field of competitors.

The series features more than $800,000 in prize money.

Brian Fleischmann and Julie Ertel are the current series leaders, with several of Saturday's competitors within striking distance.

The schedule concludes with the Series Championship at The San Francisco Triathlon at Treasure Island on November 8.

Athletes must compete in a minimum of three events to be eligible for the overall series title. If athletes compete in more than three events, the top-three results will be included in the points total. Overall Series Prize Purse $20,000: Three Deep - 1st $5,000, 2nd $3,000, 3rd $2,000.

Swimwear and sports apparel giant Speedo is also providing $5,000 in bonus money for each race on the five-city tour. American men and women who finish in the top-three in their respective races are eligible for the bonuses, with $1,500 going to the top finisher, $750 to second, and $250 to third.

In addition to the individual race bonus pool, Speedo is providing a $15,000 end-of-the-season bonus to be split if U.S. athletes finish first or second in the series. First place will receive $5,000 and second place will take home $2,500 in both the men's and women's categories.
