The accelerating, worsening climate disruption and climate emergency means that we must now aim to cut carbon emissions (carbon dioxide, CO2, and methane, CH4) 80% by 2020. This site is dedicated to informing the public about the views of expert climate scientists, paleoclimate scientists, climate change analysts, and community activists who say that radical cuts in carbon emissions of the order of 80% by 2020 are needed to avert catastrophic climate change. Included in this compilation are the views of those pushing for rapid uptake of renewable energy e.g. 100% renwables by 2020 or indeed sooner. Thus “100% renewable energy by 2020” would mean “cut carbon emissions 80% by 2020” if coupled with energy efficiency, reforestation, return of carbon as biochar to the soil, renewable-based transport and cessation of deforestation (see Lester R. Brown, Janet Larsen, Jonathan G. Dorn, and Frances C. Moore, “Time for Plan B. Cutting emissions 80 percent by 2020”, Earth Policy Institute: http://www.earth-policy.org/Books/PB3/80by2020notes.pdf ). Readers are referred to the related very informative sites of the very active Melbourne-based Yarra Valley Climate Action Group (YVCAG: see: http://sites.google.com/site/yarravalleyclimateactiongroup/Home ), and the vigorous and catalytic Victoria-based Climate Emergency Network umbrella organization (see: http://www.climateemergencynetwork.org/ ), organizations which are both committed to 100% renewable energy by 2020. A further very useful site is that of Australia-based 300.org (see: http://sites.google.com/site/300orgsite/300-org ) which is committed to “There must be a safe and sustainable existence for all peoples and all species on our warming-threatened Planet and this requires a rapid reduction of atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration to about 300 parts per million” - which in turn means achieving 100% renewables and negative GHG pollution as soon as possible i.e. “100% renewable energy by 2020” and “cut carbon emissions 80% by 2020”. |
