The Curry Companion

Week of October 5th

This week in math we continue to develop strategies for solving addition problems. We are also working on combinations of ten.  Knowing the combinations of 10 fluently will help later on with more difficult math problems.  We continue to subitize dot arrangements.  Subitizing is the ability to instantly recognize groups of things.

I've had some parent volunteers so our class will be fortunate enough to participate in Four Winds, the science lessons taught by parents.  Our first lesson will be on October 20th and the topic will be spiders.

In reading, we are working on a new part to our literacy block.  The children have been introduced to "Read to Someone".  Partners share books and either read a whole book to the partner or take turns reading from the same book. No only do the children read to one another, but the listener has a responsibility to report back to the reader what he/she heard him/her read.
As a class we decided what this time should look and sound like.  Now we're in the process of building stamina so that "Read to Someone" can last up to 20 minutes. The children have reported to me they like reading time.  What music to a teacher's ears!!!

In science, our unit is on living organisms and their habitats.  Plants and animals (insects in particular) will be of focus.  We will work on developing a habitat for the creatures that will be coming to us, but we'll also look at how plants are living organisms.  Due to the season, finding seeds in stores can be challenging. If anyone has any seeds left over or harvested, would you be willing to donate them to our class for the purpose of science? I would greatly appreciate it.

Our Supplemental Instruction Time has started. Three days a week we focus on math.  Some children are working on forward sequences counting from 1-50, some are working on learning to skip count by 2s, 5s, and 10s, while others are working on groupings (looking at ways to make 5 & 10 using math hands, tens frames). Two days a week, some children receive extra support in Fundations while others are working on grammar and sentence development.

Finally, we will be having a Halloween Party on October 30th.  The children may BRING their costume and can change into it in the afternoon at the start of the party.  They will change back at the end of the celebration for the bus ride home.
If your child's costume should have a weapon that is apart of it, please leave that part of the costume at home. A parent volunteer will be making calls for food donations for the party.  If you do not want your phone number to be given out for this purpose, please let me know by the end of the week. Thanks so much. You can drop me an email at lcurry@satecvt.org.
