Deerfield Presbyterian Church

Upper Deerfield Township
founded 1737, built 1771
Old Deerfield Pike & Polk Lane, Deerfield Street

The congregation was organized in 1737 and was considered the main Presbyterian parish for the northern part of the county. The original meetinghouse was a log structure erected shortly after 1737. This building is made of Jersey sandstone, quarried in the township, in 1771. Its original dimensions were 38 x 48, but in 1858 a 25 foot addition was added to the rear (north) end of the building. The entry vestibule was added at that time and the arched windows installed. In 1907 the tower was added, and there were extensive renovations in 1947.

General Information:

Friendship Methodist Episcopal Church

founded 18__, built 1809
Friendship Road

This early wooden frame meetinghouse does not get as much attention as several others of equal antiquity in the state—perhaps because the entry porch is a newer addition and so the building seems less “authentic.” But it is a lovely building, and nicely maintained.

Deerfield Methodist Episcopal Church

Deerfield, Upper Deerfield Township
founded 1867, built 1868

In 1868 the Methodists in Deerfield constructed this substantial frame church. It has corner pilasters, a half-round fanlight in the pediment, which has been emphasized, in part by heavy brackets. Like many Methodist churches, this one might be mistaken for a schoolhouse.
