about

My name is Frank Greenagel. I created this wiki and am responsible for its content.

I have been photographing and writing about the religious architecture of New Jersey for more than 10 years now. I am not an architectural historian, although I am rather well-read in the topic and contributed the article on religious architecture to the Encyclopedia of New Jersey. I don't think it would be considered too boastful to say that I have seen and studied more old churches, synagogues and meetinghouses in the state than anyone, ever. I have written and published seven books (to date), which you can read about (and purchase) at the website of my main publisher, The Wooden Nail Press. My intent is to write the definitive account of every religious building in the state erected before 1900. That means 21 volumes, one for each county. At the rate of one or two a year, I have some ways to go. That's where your help can shorten the process. The research and fact-checking takes far more time than the photography and the writing.

Perhaps it is needless to say that I am fascinated with computer technology. I bought my first Apple in 1978 and I've had more than a dozen PCs since then—generally a new one every two years or so. I've been experimenting with putting information, tutorials and other learning experiences on-line since 1978. My company, Guided Learning Systems, created several of the earliest and most innovative computer-assisted instructional programs around. I still work with a few clients in higher education and corporate compliance. I am no programmer, but in that part of the task I have been aided and abetted by my friend Bill Woodall. He hosts and manages most of my websites, and can usually figure out a way to make the software do something I want it to do. He's an adjunct professor at Raritan Valley Community College in Somerville, NJ and an experienced photographer as well.

The photo was taken at Mesa Verde this fall (2008) on a month-long hiking trip to the Four Corners. My other passion is photographing and studying the ancient ruins of the Anasazi who flourished there a thousand years ago. And, yes, I do have one book on that topic in preparation right now.
