The “Zakiya Stewart Education Mission” was conceived by the late Dr. Zakiya Stewart, of Seattle. It was her vision to organize this mission, despite her battle with breast cancer which eventually took her from us. The goal was to bring
together African American women in education with their Kenyan counterparts to interact and examine best practices for educating our children in African and the USA. This Mission was organized by Arunga and Associates, Renton WA. They have been organizing Cultural Reconnection Missions for more than a decade. For two weeks, delegates traveled through beautiful Kenyan scenery, visiting with educators, students and classrooms in metropolitan cities, large provincial towns and small village settings. The journey took them first to Ethiopia where they were hosted by national dignitaries. And give the honor shown to few of viewing Lucy, in her permanent resting place. The Education Delegation have had ongoing dialogue on what was learned through inquiry, and decided what lessons would be taken back to the United States. This Cultural Reconnection Education Mission has allowed the educational wisdom of Dr. Stewart to be shared globally and to keep her spirit and regard for the excellence of our children alive.
